Which front end is most like iTunes incl. AAC?

    Hi folks

There is no sub-forum for questions not specific to a single front end, right?

I've waded through many threads related to iTunes but still couldn't find my answer. So please bear with me.

    I have a mid-size music library of 60 GB. I have 31 genres.

It's important for me to select the genre first, then either select the artist or the album. I wanna select the album when the CD is a compilation for the most part.

Are there front ends that let me do that?

Also I need AAC (mp4) playback and at least my trial version of Centrafuse for example doesn't do them until they fix the respective patent licensing.

SO in short my questions are:
    - which front end is most like iTunes when it comes to selecting Genre-Artist-Album-Track?
    - which front ends can do Genre first, then Album OR Artist?

    Thanks

I gave up on the whole itunes thing. I couldn't find anyone that wanted to support it. So I went ahead and used QTFairUse6 to remove the DRM off my itunes music files and use TagTuner to fix my IDtags.
Then in Road Runner I know of at least one way you can set your selection order the way you are wanting to. This is by arranging the folder stucture the way you want things to be in order.

    For example; Music\Genre\Albums

The only problem with this method is that you have physically arrange this yourself instead of having the Front End do it . THere maybe other ways of doing it, but that's the only one that I know of.

Thanks, I forgot to mention that my AAC files do not have DRM. So I guess they're just regular mp4s.

I need to be able to select genre first, then select either artist or album. Can any front end do that?

Most every front end has a free demo. Why don't you download them and give it a go?

If I get no answers, I'll have to. There are many of them so it would be a lot of work. And some might actually do what I need but only after customization.

If on the other hand none of the front ends do what I need a comment to that effect would save me a lot of time.

Anyway, I think my question is legitimate.

What you're expecting is that someone has already tried every front end out there and has tried to do exactly what you're doing.

    This is unreasonable.

There are possibly 10 front ends on this forum, maybe 6 or so that are actively being developed. That's no where near the 50-100 you are claiming.

Perhaps if no one has answered to your liking thus far, no one knows the answer to your very specific question.

No one ever said your question wasn't legitimate.

I don't see your point at all. I'm not expecting that someone has tried all front ends. I'm hoping that out of hundreds of users, someone may have desired the same feature and found it. Totally disagree about how this ought to be unreasonable. Anyway, if no one answers I can think about my next steps on my own. You're not helping here.

The easiest thing I can think of is just to buy a mac mini and use the AMP frontend or create a hackintosh

Road Runner is the most popular Windows based front end on the forum. Try asking in that forum if it plays AAC mp4 and if so, does it allow selection based on your criteria.

There is a poll on front ends and their usage, so you can see which have the most activity. Search on terms: "poll front end" or variations therein.

I posted a question a while back about making a roadrunner skin that gives me a file browser like interface. I keep all of my music organized by genre, then artist, and it would have been nice to have the screen split with the genre listing on the right, and the artists on the left with a list of the contents of the folder below.

Nobody knew the answer, so apparantly everyone likes to use playlists, which I can't stand. I want to tap on a song and listen to it. I don't want to have to add it to a playlist, go back a screen, find it in my playlist and only then be able to listen to it. Playlists have their place, but roadrunner shouldn't be limited to only using playlists
