help with access to shared hard drive delay

I have 2 computers running XP pro. The home computer has SB Audigy with firewire. The car computer (not installed yet) is the FV24 mobo with firewire built in. I got the networking setup. The FV 24 connects to the internet through the home computer. I can ping eachother, VNC eachother, net send eachother, access the internet from both computer, FTP eachother. My problem is when I click on the shared hard drive on either computer, I have to wait like a minute before it finds the computer on the network. I know there is a way to fix this. I have searched the MP3 board, microsoft.com, and the internet and found nothing. I read somewhere that it has to do with scheduled task on the remote computer. How can I set my computers up to have instant access to shared hard drives??

When you VNC or ping something, your using the good ol' reliable TCP/IP protocol, which works straight away and very well. However, when you use file and print sharing in Windows, your using an extra layer, the notorious Microsoft browser service.

Microsoft say that it can take "up to 20 minutes" for computers newly connected to a network to find the Master browser computer. If there isnt a Master browser, there is then an election to promote a computer to Master Browser. In practice it will only take about a minute on small networks. MS do not list a fix for this.

I doubt it. This problem has been around since Windows 95.

Try using the IP address instead of the PC name.

Also (No Slaps) NetBEUI works well for this sort of thing.

I still use it at work on our integration server to build all the Compaq Proliant Servers. No need to fuss with tons of IP info. It just works...

Agreed, use the IP and cut M$ out of the equation.

I fixed the problem by mapping all the drives to eachother. Heres my new problem that I got. And yes, I've searched and couldn't find the answer so don't flame me for not using the search. The new problem is when I do large file transfer (over 100MB), the connection freezes even though both computers state that 1394 connection is connected. I have to reboot the FV24 mobo to get the connection back. It works fine with small files (under 50MB) Heres another note. 1394 supports up to 400mbps. That translates to roughly 50Mbps. for some reason, my file transfer will never exceed 25%. That's about 12.5 Mbps. Sustained transfer rate is about 15% which is 7.5megs per second. The hard drives on both computers are ATA100. shouldn't the transfer rate peak at somewhere tween 50-100% and sustain at somewhere tween 25-50%? I also got a linksys wireless access point with USB receiver. Again the computers are less than 5 feet from eachother. The access point and the receiver are also with in 5 feet of eachother. I got the wireless networking setup and running. The transfer rate for the wireless USB only tops at 40% of 11mbps. that's only 4.4 mbps. I though wireless networking suppose to connect at 11mbps with in 50 feet in a line of sight. My other problem with the wireless networking is while transferring file, the data transfer will stop for 2-4 seconds every 15-20 seconds. Its driving me crazy when I listening to MP3 or watch videos over the network. Is there hack out there to fix this problem?? Please let me know
