    Question Monitors Illegal in Cars???

So a long story short I've had my car pc for almost a year now and all was well.

Until I gave my sister a ride in it for the first time the other day and she works in the car insurance business for Massachusetts.

Since we both live in Mass. and I have the monitor mounted in the dash she started to tell me that it is illegal to have a monitor in the dash.

She also stated that the police can pull you over and that your insurance can be cancelled.

I thought to myself why is this, all the new higher end cars have monitors in the dash and GPS systems are really just monitors that give directions.

    Is this true?

Check your local and/or state statutes.
Most states make it acceptablee for a screen for the purposes of navigational assistance and/or music playback.
Some are more vague and prohibit "moving images".
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

    Lightbulb

I researched it a bit it says

"No person shall drive any motor vehicle equipped with any television viewer, screen or other means of visually receiving a television broadcast which is located in the motor vehicle at any point forward of the back of the driver’s seat, or which is visible to the driver while operating such motor vehicle."

Now my question is what about playing music like in media player would that fall under that same???

Probably not, the statute seems to be mostly worried about TV broadcast, that is why it ays "television viewer" and "other means of visually receiving a television broadcast" While the word "screen" is in there, it is used in the context of the other items, as well as not being seperated from "other means..." by a comma or period, indicating it is "part" of that element of the offense.

Yup the standard is "moving images" with the only exclusion being GPS. So for instance the default BMV2 skin with the spinning logos... not legal. But a GPS map is fine. At least in the state of CO.

My husband worked for CC as a manager for the Car Audio install bay for over 5 years here in Texas. Because this was a concern for him and for CC they informed him that the law here (mind you, this is in Texas) is that you cannot be playing FULL MOTION VIDEO while the car is moving. Navigation is not considered full motion video. Movies are full motion video.

I think your sister was generalizing a bit too much. I'd ask her to clarify that statement before she goes off and tells everyone that.

The only place in North America where it is stilll illegal to have a GPS is in Quebec province! But this is about to change in the end of 2007 because of the city cabs....First time I thank a Taxi driver!!! lol

For the Video, its only legal if the driver CANT see it from the driver's seat. But you guys probably know that police will accept and let us go if it is use with brain.

i think for the hell of it to get around any question of it being legal in the car, you could hook up a sensor like from the fusion brain or other to the car that would work like any dvd playback factory system. A system so that if your driving it wont let you play a dvd or other moving video of length ( non gps) system while driving. if you can show foolproof that your computer wont or cant play video while driving i dont forsee any problem with it. for something like that in my car theres a little indicator light right next to shifter that only lights up if im in anything but park. that would work

hellordkb - that feature is built into streetdeck for that very reason. Of course, there's a way to bypass it, as with any system.
