There are headunits made for hotrods that have a small faceplate that might be suitable.
To be honest, they're not THAT much smaller than a single DIN headunit.
I am trying to figure out if there is such a thing as a mini Head Unit. I need to fit an aftermarker HU (that has an aux in) in my glove compartment so I can control some functions that I would like to have. Any ideas? The regualr din HU's dont fit..maybe a CDless hu?
The product is called SecretAudio
One vendor is http://www.customautosounds.com/classic/secret.html
I'd Google SECRETAUDIO for other vendors. I've seen them installed, and it's basically a faceplate that you can put on the dash with a remote headunit that can go under a seat, in a glove box, in the trunk, etc.
You might want to check out the Visteon Zoom HDZ300. Its an HD Radio receiver (also picks up analog AM / FM). The primary factor is you dont even need to use the remote faceplate it comes with since you can control it with your CarPC using this interface cable and software.
The Visteon Zoom is a great little unit, I have one myself, and it can pick up nearly all my local FM and HD FM channels without even having an antenna attached. One thing about the software thats not mentioned is that you can record any song being broadcast as an mp3. It uses the title and artist from the radio info for the mp3 name and ID3 tag. It has an auto record mode that detects the breaks between songs, so its pretty much hands free recording.
I saw this and your other post on it. I've searched and found no other infos on it so I'll ask you.
I see you mention software/usb support for the unit. I'm assuming that is its own software app.
Do you know of any Front End support for the unit or have you tried embedding the app in any front end w/ any success/failures? If so which ones?
Looks like a great solution, btw. thanks for the find.
Any light you can shed on the aboves are greatly appreciated.
I am trying to, working on a roadrunner skin for it but I am a lousy artist.
You can turn off its internal skin so that only the LCD part of the display is visible and then position it on the screen where you want it within a skin. It accepts all its button commmands from either keyboard key press or sendwindow (if your into programming).
You can also make it completely invisible and use the data it provides and command it from within another software app.
BTW, I am using it with a USB to Serial converter cable since I dont have an extra serial port for it. It works fine, except the stupid USB to Serial converter does not like hibernation at all. I guess I should have grabbed a better one than the one I have.
Just thought I would point this out, likely wont effect anyone else.
OK. So I'll take that as basically one big (sort of) yes?
I'm no artist myself but I might be able to help w/ some photoshop stuff if that's what you need. I don't know much yet about skinning (still too busy P LA N N I N G the install and such) but I'm assuming it'd be a bunch of gif/png/jpgs/whatever for buttons (not unlike building a web page's graphics, which I've done a few times)).
Does that sound about right?
If you know the lay of the land and point me in the right direction I could prolly help out.
I liked the part where you said you could turn off most of the skin and just show the "LCD". Have you tried to embed that in RR or does that mode not have any controls (buttons) and so is not so useful (i.e. you need to make a page with controls and regions for "Display" feedback to use it) [ <== i hope that part made sense..]
else, have you tried just embedding the whole tuner app in road runner (at least for now) or do you just use it's own app "floating" over the top of RR?
What do you do for task-switching if so?
Thanks for the answers/help/ideas!!
It communicates with roadrunner, or so it seems, since when the roadrunner skin changes (like from radio to GPS) it hides the LCD display. The roadrunner skin design is basically just a matter of editing the radio skin and converting it to an HD Radio skin that does not suck. My attempts seem to suck. Its the background texture that I cannot seem to get right.
Its all pretty easy other than that, you just edit an ini file and specify "displayonly=1" so that just the LCD is displayed, and then provide values for the "Top=" and "Left=" to position the LCD correctly for the skin.
I just edited the Radio_Player.skin file so it sends keystrokes to control the HD Radio application. There needs to be a few more buttons added for full control,(like "MENU" and "DISP") but you can switch channels and stuff at least. I am sure a real skin designer type could make a pretty cool skin, much better than what I could ever do..
You can hide the HD Radio app completely and just control it from within roadrunner and use the data the radio app supplies for the skin display values, but that requires modifying the roadrunner app a bit and I want to take it one step at a time.
You can also adjust the size of the HD Radio app itself, sort of a force resolution type of thing. Specify the 1280x720 mode and the thing is huge; entire width of my 7" touch screen display.
Ive been using it that way since I dont really use a front end much anymore, just listen to the radio mainly.
