I'm Glad you asked about that cable because I got my mac back today and had to reinstall the cable so I took pictures thinking you'd my want to see them.Yes you have to pull the cable every time you want to take out the mac from the car. Yes it comes on when I start the car. Well It wakes from sleep mode when I start the car
The first picture is of the power button cord you unplug. The second is showing you to plug in the Y cable where you unplugged the factory plug and also to plug the factory plug into one end of the Y cable. The third is showing you the little post you bend back and the opening to put the other end of the Y cable through. Fourth is with the Y cable through. Fifth is everything back together.

Also You don't have to add this wire if you don't want. But if you don't add it you will have to manually turn your mac on and off. That would let you still make a dock.

WOW... THAT was an AWESOME response. Thank you so much. I've read enough info, that I think I know where everything goes now...I found my ignition wire yesterday. Just waiting for the screen to arrive. The question now is...manual start/stop .... or automatic on/off? hmm...I'm just thinking for short little trips, I may not want the mac to start up..ie: off to the grocery store for a bit...no need for the mac to start up. With that cable, does the mac stay in 'stand by mode'? And then wakes if you press a button on the screen? If that is the case, then this cable installation is worth it. Especially when turning off the car...no need to power down the mac.

Mine personally goes into standby(sleep) mode, and doesn't wake up if you hit a button. However You can download the latest firmware and make it shutdown when you turn off the car(your carnetix may already have it installed). If you want it to wake from sleep you can do that by changing your mac settings to wake from any activity of your keyboard or mouse. Also you probably want to set your jumper to leave the mac on for a extended period of time when you turn off the car. Also with the cable the mac comes on any time you start the car. Goodluck I hope that was helpful

why don't you want your mac to come on for short trips? Wouldn't you use your mac as your music library. With Front Row the mac is perfect for music or movies no matter how short the trip

    AJ,

What I meant by a short trip...was like ...literally turn on car...drive for 5 minutes... turn off car..That's what I meant by a short little trip...by the time i select a song, press play, heck i'll already be at my destination. But if the mac is just in standbymode automatically, than that's not bad. I'll probably end up connecting the cable...hook it all up and see how it functions from that point on.

I'm probably gonna see if I can find a headphone jack (female and male) and try to connect the green/black wires to that...it'll make it easier to connect and disconnect it that way. I probably won't do much until next week, when my screen arrives. It was supposed to be in today, but i got a call saying there were backorders...so not until early next week.

Yeah my pictures were showing you How I do mine. I did it this way so I wouldn't void the warranty. But using jacks would let use a dock.

    Quick question about your install.

If you pull the mini from your car and take it into your home, how do you 'turn it on' if you've added that green/black cable. It seems like a lot of work to continually opening the mini each time.

the greenblack cable is a Y cable. So on end goes to the regular power button the other goes to the carnetix. If you take your mini inside you would plug it in and just hit the power button.
