While you would still have to change discs, a DVD burner would probably be the best bet.
I am in a similar situation, and I am actually looking at an external Firewire drive to back up my 40Gb laptop drive.
I'm trying to decide on a backup device for my server. I've got about 25Gig of MP3's and need to start backing them up. I'd rather not use CD's. I don't want to have to be there to change the disks ever 10min. And another hard-drive wouldn't really work for what I'm going for.
I've considered tape, but I'm concerned abou the cost. Any other suggestions?

I vote for the DVD burner too. I saw one for $200 at tigerdirect, and they hold 9GB per side. They're cheaper than tape drives and more reliable. They may be faster, too.
I am not sure that I would say a DVD would be more reliable than a tape backup.
I own a hosting company and all of our servers are backed up by Tape and its VERY rare that we have one go bad. In my eyes they are VERY relaible.
Every once in a while a tape drive may need to be cleaned, easy enough. Stick a cleaning tape in and it pops out in a few seconds. Thats about all the maitenance we have had to do with them
Yes, they are not cheap, but VERY reliable.

Yea tapes are reliable but slow to find/restore a file. With the price of dvd burners coming down I would pick one myself. Tapes in the DLT and ALT are expensive.
Why not just buy an additional hard disk? You could use a backup routine to duplicate the files, or just mirror the drives.
I second that...Originally posted by Mxyzpltk

80Gig. 7200 RPM. drives are less than $100 shipped...
Beacuse a Hard disk is not a reliable backup system. Sure it can keep a copy of your files, but there are manythings it can't protect from.
virus that goes across all the files
theft of the computer its in
fire/flood/surge, etc
Sure you can put the second hdd in a removable cage, but drop it and you loose data. I have dropped tapes and cd's and never hurt them.
My servers at work are backed up on DLT (9 slot autoloader and go out to firefroof storage each morning)
My backups at home are cd based, one copy stays with me, one copy stays in a safe at home. Incase of theft/fire etc my data is in a seperate location.
I think we missed the most important question...
How much do you want to spend?
damn...
Sorry guys.
I'm loosing my mind again. Must've hit the "next thread>" button instead of the "page 2" button. Honest mistake. I beg for your forgiveness.
