    Homemade Car Alarm

After reading Spyder's troubles, let's hear your ideas for the perfect car alarm. Nothing fanciful like spikes shooting of of steering wheels or ejection seats. Realistic features.

    Here's mine.

    The device:
    A low powered SBC
Normally runs off Disk on Chip, but has laptop HDD for captured video
Backup batteries and uses main battery to recharge or when alarm sounds
Small video camera mounted above rear view mirror

    What sets it off:
Doors are opened or window shatters
    Battery is disabled
    Trunk or hood is opened

    What happens:
    Fuel line shuts off
Loud Sirens under car goes off announcing thievery in every direction
Cam turns on, records to hard drive. Mounted above rear view mirror.
GPS submits location and velocity to pager or cell phone

    What disables it:
4-6 digit code on remote keypad

Your stuff might still get stolen, but at least you'll see who did it. Since it's a custom setup, they'll have a much harder time turning it off. The battery can be disabled and it will still work for a period of time. Long enough for me to grab anything that kills and head over to my car.

I think one of the most important things is a pager or cellphone link for it, so that it can alert you when its being stolen, because loud alarms dont do anything if the theif is waiting for one. They'll just act like its their own car and they set it off accidentally.

With some way of it contacting you though, you can go out there and find whats happening when its happening.

Also, if you have a gps/pager in the car you can set it to transmit its location every so often, or if you send it a command with the pager.

I was thinking more of a "Attention everyone in the area. This person is stealing this car. Call the police," repeated at ~130db or so instead of a siren.

Now that I think about it, GPS shouldn't be necessary since the fuel line is cut off.

    Sounds like a fun project.

A lot of people have the pager option. But they are still easily deactivated as is any alarm. Most professionals have universal transmitters that will unarm a car after a minute or two of brute force code testing.

IMO you cant prevent someone from breaking into your car and stealing something. BUT you can make them skip your car and go to someone elses. Many newer and more expensice HUs wont work w/o a password being entered if power is cut. Great little stickers come with these that say "stereo will not work if removed." I put them on every door.

Dont give them a reason to break in...if they cant see anything, then why would they think you have something. Except for my 15's in the back (which are easily covered by my sliding cover), all my stuff is hidden.

An empty gun holster is probably a good option too. Something tells me if a criminal sees a gun holster sitting in you car, he'll think twice. I throw my US Marshal hat in the windshield. Helps me from getting parking tickets too.

Ohh and LO-JACK WORKS VERY WELL!!

i have the pager alram that tells me when my car gets hit or someone opens the door...the problem is that it has a limit on how far u can be away from ur car....So when i goto school i turn it off cuz it keeps on beeping when its out of range....

i like the ideas u have gutter...i want to know who the S.O.B that even sits on my car is...

WTF do people sit on other people's car....i still dont understand this??....if its not urs get off it.....

Also i would like it to send them an electrical zap like a stun gun when the alarm gets triggered....

True, i forgot the part about cutting off the fuel line.

With the brute force code breakers, those would only work with regular alarm systems. If a system was designed that had a sbc to power it, it could use some sort of encryption like RC5, which took several years for the distributed client to crack. That would be equal to many many years with a portable scanner. If you set it up so you could use a wireless lan card in the sbc, and then another card in some type of palm pc, you could run very high encryption on it, which would prevent almost anyone from scanning the signal.

Edit: another idea, although this is really a long shot, and would be alot of work and expensive. Use something like a touch screen surface over the whole body of the car. When someone touches it, or sits on it, or something, you could ahve it say something like "Please dont touch the hood", and it would say where ever it was that they touched. It could also have a camera that would turn on if someone touched it.

Or what about it playing a police siren? I dont know if thats legal, but it might work.
