I'm running Win95 in my setup and i'm running into problems trying to play sounds when exiting windows. When i have WinAmp running and listening to music i use the shutdown command ( C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe, exitwindows ) which is activated by a shortcut from F12. When i press the F12 button WinAmp and Windows closes but no sound is played!, BUT... if i close WinAmp "first" then press F12 i get the EXIT WINDOWS sound played. I would like to know if there's a solution to this as i would like to "hear" that windows is actually shutting off. By the way i don't have a monitor in the car since i use a Palm to control WinAmp.
you'd have to run winME or XP in order to be playing winamp then hear like your shutdown sound at the same time. That was a feature that was added into the OS in winME i think.

I can play multiple sounds using win98, so maybe it was introduced back then?

Make sure you are using WinAMP's "DirectSound" output plugin (check in Preferences) rather than the "WaveOut" plugin.
The DirectSound plugin allows mutiple applications to access the sound hardware.

it depends on wich soundcard also, and os.
the newer the better.
thanks for the feedback, i'll try the directsound plugin rather than the waveout. As for going to another operating system i'll still be sticking to 95 for now.
Well i tried using the Direct Sound plugin but my sound card or o.s doesn't support it because i kept getting an error message. I then tried switching back to the waveout plugin but that wouldn't work so i ended up reinstalling WinAmp to go back to Waveout plugin. Maybe i will try it on Win98 on another machine first or just learn to live without the logoff sound. Is there no way to modify the shutdown command string to stop playing WinAmp first?
To use DirectSound, make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed.

"latest version of DirectX installed" , okay i never thought of that. I'll give it a try and let you know what happens since it would save time from installing 98.
