    Cellphone Bass Feedback

Not sure if this is the right place, but currently I am having trouble with feedback but its a bass feedback instead of a high pitch squeal.

I am using a simple labtec microphone, and phoco, and everything is working, but I think phoco drops the volume on a call down to 20 or 50% and I cant hear it so I jack up the volume on my head unit which I let everything pipe through the aux. input and when I get to where I can hear it well, its like a thunderous bass feedback reverbiration.

Any ideas on what to do to get it to act right?

In your system tray, double click on your volume icon. Go to the options menu, select Properties. Then scroll around and add "Microphone" to the list of checked items. Then exit that menu, and check "Mute" under microphone. This will mute the microphone output, but not the input.

    I had the same issue..

    Hope that helps.

I did that and that doesnt solve it.
Its on mute untill phone control unmutes it for the conversation, then I increase volume to hear and get an incredible bass reverbaration.

I think I need a super mic of some kind. One that maybe does noise cancelation or something.

i'm sure there is a way to improve that without spending a quadrillion dollars though. have you tried checking/unchecking the db boost under recording options for the mic? see if that makes a difference.

on second thought, maybe you could run your mic input through an equalizer to roll off the bass a little until no longer causes feedback. not to sure how to set that up without getting some sort of software though..

Yeah Im not spending that kinda money on a mic.

I have tried all that db boost stuff you mentioned too. I have almost giving up and have bought several mics.

The main most thing I wanted to work out of this carpc was handsfree tele.

You need to find a way to keep your microphone muted in the output volume. There is no reason for it to be un-muted unless you want to use it as a P.A. system.

The microphone input volume can be high, as long as the microphone output volume is muted. I don't know why your phone software is unmuting the OUTPUT volume, because it shouldn't be.

If you can't find a software solution to keep your microphone output volume muted, then one hardware solution is a high pass filter. A high pass filter filters out low bass frequencies. You can buy a crossover for $50 on eBay. Or you can buy a passive high pass filter (basically it will just be a capacitor in parallel with the signal). You can make one for $1 or buy one for less than $20.

Or search around to see if a software equalizer can be applied to your microphone input.

You and I may not be on the same page here.

I still have my pioneer head unit in place for FM and backup cd player. I have my carputer going through its aux input in the back, and of course that pipes it through my sound system with the two 12" kicker subs on amps.

I use phoco from phonecontrol.net. It works good, only I cant hear the person calling so I jack up the volum on the headunit and then there is this reverbiration of feedback in the form of BASS.

    Its strange.

I see that in the volume control properties, there is playback and recording.

On recording, there is no mute or anything, only SELECT.

On playback there is a MUTE function. It is checked also.

When you receive a call I think its unmutes it so you can speak.

I do not understand what you mean as far as output, as I never heard of a mic being used as any type of output. ITs like a linein, its meant to have INPUT.

    Please advise.

I had the same problem, phonco forums suggest that a noise canceling mic is the solution, I never got that far cause I had other issues too & have put phone on hold till a better solution comes along... you don't need to spend a fortune on a noise cancelling mic, $30-80 should do it I think...

Sorry for using vague terms, I'll clarify.

By "mic output," what I really mean is "the microphone setting in the PLAYBACK volume control."

By "mic input," what I really mean is "the microphone setting in the RECORDING volume control."

The mic can be muted in your playback volume control and still function. Your computer will still receive the microphone signal. The playback microphone control only determines how load your speakers will play whatever comes into through the microphone jack.

That is why I say it should always be muted..

I also had the same bass feedback and I only have one alpine type-x 12". This is because our bass is probably turned up relatively high compared to the other frequencies and it is the first frequency to hit that critical volume to get into a feedback loop. My feedback disappeared when I muted my microphone in the "Playback" control.
