my old setup has no problem with winter weather, the new setup however, is more expensive but much less effective for winter. Hard drive fails, and xenarc fails too.

Why are you worried about condensation? Condensation occurs on stuff that's colder than the ambient temperature, and the carpc should be quite a bit warmer

Blowing warm air over a cold surface will cause condensation on the cold surface.

This would be my only concern.

I'm working on a suplimental warming scheme for my trunk mounted system as well. Haven' worked out the details yet but I'm getting close.......

I'll post something if I ever get close to a final stage.

Also note that mp3car store has an automotive grade hard drive that has temperature specs down to -30F. Here's one, there are at least two listed in the store.

My computer takes probably 20 minutes of driving at least until it warms up enough to spin the hard drive. Even then it doesn't always start up.

I kinda like the idea of it slow-warming itself to fend off the chances of condensation. But wow. What a PITA! I'm deff going to look into maybe getting a CF daughterboard for the OS at least and maybe a few songs to tie me over until the HDD spins. I have an 8GB CF-I card for my camera that supposedly writes at 125x. Although i'm not a fan of this way of describing the speed (125 times what?) Will it be a noticeable difference (ie. slower) than the HDD?

Anyways, to any other northerners out and about, enjoy the cold

A side note: Wind Chill only matters to living things (you) Thermometer temps matter to the car and the carPC

My 300 gig Maxtor drive has trouble turning when sitting in an ambient temperature of < 30F. It takes about ten minutes for XP to finally load if the drive sits overnight in below-freezing temperatures. Fortunately, I have the drive in a caddy that I can easily remove and bring in the house overnight. Using a caddy also makes it very easy to update music, videos, pictures, etc., since I can just plug it into an empty bay in my house computer. I'm aware that a caddy won't work for everyone due to the nature of their setups, but it works well for me.

I'm starting to have some problems with extremely cold mornings. My carputer wont boot untill I get the car all warmed up. I found these drives after a bit of searching. They are supposed to be good for cold weather.
