Thnking of installing Audi A4 Car pc

    Hi all,
I have been looking at mp3car.com forums for a while, and I think it looks like a car computer could be really cool. I am expiereinced with building computers, but not car pcs. I have a 2001 audi a4, but the previous owner took out the stock stereo, and replaced it with a 2 din holder. I was thinking of installing a 1 din pc and a 1 din moniter.

For the moniter I was thinking the xenarc with the built in dvd drive. Juswt because its nice to have dvd and radio without booting up.

What do you guys think about a 1 din pc? I dont want to hack apart my car.

    Any help is apreciated

You definitely dont have to hack up your car to do the computer part. The screen can get tricky, but a flip out style screen with vga input and touch could be the answer. You could easily install the pc in the trunk, under the seats (some say this is a no no) or in the glove box. None of these things are prefabbed for the most part, which means you make it what you want it to be! From what i understand, a single din pc will lack power. If you want it to do anything else besides play music, than you might consider going larger. Look around in the Fabrication forums for some ideas, or the worklogs area.

take it from someone who hacked their car apart....you've got a ton of space in the B5 A4 without 'over-dremeling'. I'd start by hitting shokan or a junk yard for a spare console to work on (ALWAYS keep the stock one stock). I've fit the entire Mini-Itx motherboard in the center (behind the radio-removed). After several years i'm relocating it to the trunk.
    ...you know, that guy...

    Ok thanks allot,
I have an hp laptop without a screen, so im thinking maybe Ill use that. I thas a real video card, and has excellent performance for a laptop. Where would you recommend puting it? Also, my biggest problem so far is figureing out how to route the wires to the back of the touchscreen ( most likely motorized in dash xenarc ). HOW DO I DO THAT!??!

    Thanks again

Mount the laptop under the passenger seat, most laptops will fit in there sideways.

Run the cables under the seat sliding frame and into the center console from where you can easily go into the dashboard.

With a wireless keyboard and a motorized 1 din touchscreen you can get a very clean install.

Have you read the reviews of that Xenarc screen? If not, I'd recommend doing so....especially before you go and plan your whole install around it.

    Thanks Allot,
I still have to figure out a way to get the center console off, but I think I can figure it out. I have looked at the reviews for the in dash xenarc, Im thinking of using the one with the dvd drive.

Are you sure you've read the reviews?

That device isn't even available right now and there's no ETA from Xenarc.

They had to go back and rework the entire thing because of the number of issues that were found with the unit.

Oh wow, I ddint know that. It is still available at another store, but Im not sure I want to get it if there are so many issues. I think I will wait untill the it is on sale at mp3car.com. Also, I am expierimenting with the laptop placement, and still I find the biggest problem to be running the wire into the center. Does anybody know where I could find listings for places that might be willing to do the install for me?

Thanks for the help, and that warning
