Exclamation 2Ch or 5.1 for CarPc

like the Title says should i run 2Ch or 5.1 in my Carpc, I have a sound blaster x-fi if i run 5.1 when i play mp3s and movies that are 2Ch the card will run front and rear speakers. But if I run my Hd Radio or my sirius it will only come out of my front speakers because the Card is just piping the linein directly to the front speaker output. thoughts and experience welcome, but please keep it flame free

Go with 5.1, dont limit yourself to 2 channel, just because sirius and hd only play 2 channel.... I wouldnt want to watch a movie or listen to mp3s in 2 channel if it is capable of 5.1............... Have you thought of maybe changing your soundcard?

You can change the setting on your xfi card to output 2ch over all the speakers. Cant remember where it is at the mo but if someone else doesn't do it first I will later. Personally I don't like it but that's probably just me lol. Full 5.1 in a car is a pain anyway as its difficult to get the centre speaker somewhere.

Well I actually meant 4.1 sound. On my soundcard inorder to get 4.1 I have to set it to 5.1. When I leave off the center speaker, the card automatically simulates the center by pumping it to the left and right front speakers, I guess I figured the others do the same. Yes I do agree, adding the center speaker is a pain, i tried it, didnt like how it sounded in the car and removed it..... seemed better in 4.1

Better yet, patch the 2 channel music into AudioMulch or CONSOLE and control each of your 6 channels however you wish. EQ...delay...crossover...ambiophonics...

I say go with 2-channel if you REALLY want a sound quality system. Getting the best in SQ is really not practical with surround sound or even rear fill for that matter. If you want a very good sounding setup, put some money in to nice components for the front and then a nice SQ sub stage in back.

I was always that person who said "I can't stand not having rear speakers!". However, now that I've got a good SQ setup going with a component set and subs. Once you get the time alignment and driver balance set up, you'll never go back. Just imagine how music sounds on headphones, then apply that to your car.
    CarPC:
    1.8GHz Northwood, Intel 845 Mobo, 512MB DDR, 1x20GB + 1x160GB, Intel GPU, SB Live 5.1

    Sound System:
Phoenix Gold RSD 65cs 6.5" Drivers, Infinity Tweets, Pioneer 305DVC 12", PPI Sedona 630IX, Alpine MRP-M500

I'd have to disagree with you here...and, subsequently, I guess a LOT of people on here.
If you've ever been to a concert hall, and listened to a full orchestra, you'll notice (depending on how good your seats are and how good the hall is) that the sound isn't coming from JUST in front of you, but surrounds you, for lack of a better word

Now, your car isn't exactly a concert hall, obviously.
But, if you had your front stage speakers setup on the concert hall stage, I'm pretty sure you could almost replicate an orchestra from the same seating position...
And this is why it's important to have rear channel setup in the relatively small cabin of your car...to more accurately replicate what you experience in a concert hall...

Even is an auditorium, listening to a heavy metal act, again depending on where your seated, your not going to easily determine where the music is 'staged'.

But certainly, a LOT of you on here have gone thru great lengths and time and money and successfully 'tricked' your ears into thinking that your front-only staging replicates the 'live' experience...

Well i cant get Virtual audio cable to work right it wont take the line in or aux line in and do anything with it so looks like i will go 2ch most of my movies are 2ch anyway i just need to settle how to get the rewind and fast forward buttons to change the audio streams and turn off/on subtitles

im just going to bridge the Driver Front and rear and the passenger front and rear together so i get sound at all 4 speaker
Im also using the stock amp powering the door subs and using a 4ch 400w to power the 4 reg speakers probably will only use 2 of the channels tho using stock speaker to so i dont need a ton of power
