Does anyone know if you can but dynamic range compressors for cars?
And you say people actually pay money for M$ Windows?

Total re-design underway: on the whole progress is very slow as the car is taking up too much time :)

I reserve all rights in connection to each post I author, without exception.
When the engine is running (I have a very noisy engine) I really have to turn the stereo up to hear some of the quiter parts of the tracks and then when the main track cuts in, I madly scramble for the volume control while my ear bleed.
Bands like Skunk Anansie are really bad for this kind huge range in volume levels.

i'm currently listening to minidisks in my car while i`m building my mp3player. I`ve recorded all of my minidisks with loads of dynamic compression (aswell as a bit of DFX enhancement), so i can hear the quiet bits.
I know it sounds like a bit of a bodge, but recording whatever media u use in the car (tape/cd/minidisk) with dynamic compression works fine. The only downside is that you can`t adjust the amount of compression after it`s recorded, but i usually find a nice setting and stick with it.
Rob, this may be a bit of a stretch, but its just an idea. The simple fact that you've installed a car 'puter, means you don't mind doing a little "rigging". Take a look at this unit:
Phonic Compressor
I bought one of these from Mars Music (who has since gone out of business) for $39.95. I'm not saying you'ld find one that cheap again, but you might get close.
Whats interesting about this unit is, even though its a 19 inch rack mount, its only 4 inches deep, and it runs on a 10 VAC-600ma wall-wart. It would be pretty simple to build a small supply for it, and you could take it out of its case to make it more compact. Then just "hard-wire" the controls that you would never use and keep what you would use.
Like I said, its a stretch, but do-able.
Dex.
