Site looks good, prices look grossly inflated. They're selling the Cappuchino mini-PC with a LCD screen and probably a chopped version of something like Route66. They're asking for $1200 for the computer alone on their "packages" page, and they don't list any screens shipped with.

Personally, I'd just get a 1ghz Celeron from idot.com for $650, and use the other $550 to get a DSCustoms indash or something.

    yeah, I dunno..

I thought of turning this carpc thing into a business when I was done with my ride (so I could showcase what I could do)..

The problem is, something like installing a pc into a car is an extremely unique and custom job each and every time. You just have to look at the varied ways people have done things.. Selling a "pre-packaged" system works well in theory, but odds are if you've gotten to the point where you want to install a pc in your car, you also have a very distinct idea of what you want it to do.. from only playing mp3's, to full blown control of the vehicle's electronics, diagnostic systems, audio/visual and communications.. And that involves custom wiring, custom fabrication, in some cases custom programming. And that stuff doesn't come cheap if you're not doing it yourself.

Frankly, if I was paying someone, I could never afford to do it.. Hell.. I don't think very many people could afford to do it. We're talking MegaCar in terms of what it would cost considering all the custom stuff that's going in.. I HOPE to have it finished by autumn 2004 (and I started last October).. I've been mulling over and planning the concept for over a year.. that should give you an idea of the scope of my particular project..

Bottom line, if you get one of those package deals, you're more than likely getting a compromise.. you might as well do it yourself and do it the way you want it.. and if that means you have to learn techniques in the process so much the better (so far I've learnt VB, basic electrical circuit theory/practical, fiberglassing, woodworking, metalwork.. stuff I probably never would have learnt if I hadn't tackled this project, but I'm real glad I did, cause now I can apply it in so many other areas)

bah.. enough of my rantings.. if it works for these guys, good for them.. but I wouldn't be suprised if it didn't..

yeah i think that carputing is really for the hobbyist like we're all doing. if someone has the big bucks to do it their way they might as well go with a nice alpine system for almost the same money and it will never CRASH!

I think this is the same guy that was in our forums talking about building a the software from scratch. Like not using winamp but building a mp3/dvd/such right into the software. If its the same guy he had a really big thread in the software forum.

actualy i think albysure was refering to several comments in the 5speedpc sites forum where they accused him of spamming and trying to sell things on another companies web site.
