Using a Volume Booster to boost MIC.

Today I was at radio shack and they had this 3-channel headphone volume booster. I was wondering if I could use this to boost my mic. Currently when I drive, hands free phone works ok, people can hear me, but when I try to use voice command to control the PC, I have to scream at the top of my lungs to get it to do anything. Originally the way this thing works, is you connect it to the headphone jack, then it boost the volume then goes to your headphone. i was thinking of connecting the MIC as the input then connect the soundcard to the output of the device. Will I have to worry about over loading the MIC port and maybe blowing it out? Has anyone else attempted this?

    are you referring to this?

before you buy/try that... [assuming you're using windows XP], have you enabled the microphone boost in the volume control panel? (you need to enable advanced controls, then click the button under the mic volume slider)

Yea, thats it, but mine has it on clearance for $9.95. I went ahead and bought it, its cool to have even if I dont use it for the PC.

I have never ever seen that option before, I most def have to try that. Did you get noticable results using it?

it didn't say +20db on my laptop either. (the pic is from this site).

I don't have a mic hooked up to my carPC so I've never bothered to check what's on there. I think it depends on the sound card (or onboard sound) whether that option is there and how much of a boost that option would actually give.
