I have a 2002 Infiniti I35. I installed the stock navigation system in the car only to learn that once completed, the most recent map CD was created in 2005. Nissan/Infiniti have since switched to DVD based nav systems and no longer offer support or update CDs for my system.
On the newer Nissan DVD navigation systems, the computer/drive is seperate from the controls on the dash. On my system, the whole thing is one piece - drive/nav computer and buttons mounted on the same single DIN unit in the dash (similar to an aftermarket CD player).
My question is: Could I get a DVD drive from a newer system, keep my stock nav system in the dash soley for the use of the controls/buttons, but connect the buttons to the new DVD drive?
Or is there another way? (And no, I don't want to just get a whole new aftermarket nav system. I like the stock pop-up screen and the stock look.)
Thanks!
Zach

Need more info. Take the dash apart and look inside at how the system is built, how it connects, and so forth. Post pictures if you have them.
Also, the Nissan forums probably have maintenance people who know the answer to this.
+1 for ditching the current system and putting a PC. You can probably finance the install for the whatever you get from selling the stock system.

I've been trying to stick with the stock look. And if I sell the car, I'd want to put the original parts back and keep the car pc.
I still have to connect the nav to the sound system for the voice guidance. When I do that, I'll take some picts of the connections and what-not.
