i have a few thin clients also some with replaceable mem, some with out.....ive managed to get a few of them to boot with DSL form a thunmb drive (DSL = Dam small linux) . i have one that i was able to up the ram from 128 to 512., installed XP pro on it, & it was like a snail....IMO i thnk XP needs @ least 1gb to run properly.....if you can upgrade the storage & mem., & install a linux or similar OS youo shoudl have no problem saving info to the HD, with thin clients it isnt the HW that lmits you to saving, its the OS they use

I have got a few PMs from people asking about the casing for these units. Yes they fit a mini-itx board, but to a certain limit. Basically all the screw holes will match up, but if the mobo is to high with its components, then the lid wont close. Pix below.

As you can see, its not a perfect square, but more of a triangle. What I am going to do is buy a thing mini-itx, to be specific, the Intel D945GSEJT Johnstown Mainboard http://www.logicsupply.com/products/d945gsejt. It is made for thin cases, infact it seems to be so thin that I can fit the HDD, and maybe the PSU into the case.

Nice board, very thin. I'm facing an issue with the M4-ATX right now fitting in the Thin Client with the stock heatsink/fan.

I have a Scythe low profile heatsink/fan in my desktop I'd like to try on this board, but I'm not sure it'd fit any better because of the large heatsink on the chipset.

Have you tried only using the plastic lid? wont it close then? I want to use the metal also, thats why I like the MoBo I found.

If I use only the plastic lid it closes without issue. I've got the laptop drive and the heatsink/fan in there without issue, but I haven't figured out just yet how I'm going to get the power supply to sit pretty.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread...hijack.

Its fine, as you can see Ive thread jacked my own thread to something else. What PSU are you thinking of? I know a HDD will fit perfect, the PSU is a different story since it has so many wires coming from it. This is the other reason that I am using the mobo listed. It uses a standard adapter plug. I plan to use EWF and HORM so that the system can be just switched off without corruption. This will allow me to not have to worry about all the drive cables, mobo cable and what not. Bad thing is I dont think the hibernate like a normal MoBo because the mobo has no control over the power adapter. You can pretty much make anything fit, just depends on how much your willing to mod.

Well I decided to take the original Mobo out and use a up to date Atom Mother Board. To be specific the D945GSEJT. It is as thin as the original motherboard, but obviously 3 million times more powerful. The HDD will be connected to lid of the case. There is alot of space by using this thin motherboard.

I have the M4-ATX sitting on my desk at home. That's the one I'm planning to use, but I think it with - as you mention - all the cables will be too much to fit in the Thin Client.

The hard drive I mounted on a piece of plexi and secured the plexi to the Thin Client using one of the screw holes already in it and a zip tie.

I'm thinking I might have to mount the M4 externally, which I'd REALLY rather not do, but it's not looking like I have an option at this point.
