    baddest sytems I can build?

    Hey Guys,

    Here's the scoop,

What's the best processor I can fit into a Voom PC? with an M2 ATX?

I'd love to be able to make a quad core work. If not, dual core?

Probably wouldnt want to use the M series power supplies with something that powerful. I wouldnt trust my M2 with anything more than a low power Via or Celeron, after hearing all of horrible stories of what happens when you overload it.

I have no issues stepping up to a more powerful power supply.
    Recomendation?
I just need to it fit into a small case, I don't even have to stick with the Voom. Just need a small, very powerful machine.

has anyone done quad core or dual core? and non atom. Or are atoms that bad?

Dual cores are perfectly do-able. I have an AMD 5050e in mine. Go with the lower TDP ones, like any of the 45w AMD or 65w Intel CPUs.

Quad cores will put out significantly more heat. Too much for a Voom case. Get something with better ventilation, like this: http://www.mini-box.com/M350-univers...-itx-enclosure

Well Intel makes 35W and 65W Core 2 Duos. I run one in a MSI board. They draw less power than most of the older processors.

    And atoms aren't bad.

As i'm sure you've browsed through the forum and heard many state their opinion, i can only echo what's been said (with good intentions).

Putting a powerful system in a car has it's pro's and con's. Make yourself a list of these points and you will have the best system you can possibly ask for. As Nobb mentioned (and i learned the hard way) having the wrong hardware can be frustrating. Although, new technology and improvements in power consumption, heat and processing has greatly improved, there's still room for error.

With that said, i've had my eye on the Nvidia motherboard for the main reason that it's NVIDIA - a video guru company. Their reputation exceeds them and creating a motherboard around their video technology is one interesting approach. Their mobo however uses Atom, which IPO, is not a bad thing. The mobo is capable of 4gb of ram (ideal for Win7). Has dual screen built in (drooling)... And due to it's processor and small form factor - i would venture to guess that power consumption may be ideal for a car pc.

Here's a link to the mobo by Zotac with Nvidia ION @ newegg:

ZOTAC GF9300-D-E LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9300 HDMI WiFi Mini ITX Intel Motherboard - Correction: This MOBO goes up to 8gb! woot woot!

    good luck

most mini itx board that supports 775 socket (ie zotac, intel...etc), will get you core2duo, core2quad...
which is a total overkill by any standard, but if you think its necessary then by all means.
The real problem is the heatsink + fan, which you can get a low profile version or fanless.
There's still one more problem, moving sufficient amount of air through that case for a high power c2d or c2q, would be quite tough without extra fans.
So my opinion would get a bigger case!
    OR
buy board with mobile c2d processors, hella expensive.
    OR
go for something less of an overkill, ie atom330.

just to add a bit to afterdigital and Punky:
What do you plan on doing with the system? If it's just to play music, nav, some video, etc., then quad core is just overkill. Atoms aren't that bad. I personally think they are great for car applications (low power and heat).
