@ Justchat_1: Mate, while I will back my points above (wrt linux and OBDII dongles), I would like to apologize for this discussion getting out of hand, and turning it somewhat personal.

It was uncalled for, and I have no excuse. I trust you will accept this apology, and if not, please PM me to discuss.

You guys have a good one, sorry for going off-topic

This is a new bios/feature. I wouldn't expect to see it on any mini-itx boards for a while. Do we even know who the target is for this bios? Probably netbooks/ other ultra-mobile devices...

I see. Well I gotta say I am examining all possibilities for a CarPC that I am putting together. My biggest fear is boot time. I will be trying out OpenICE on Ubuntu 9.10 I am not a linux person so the idea of putting together something in my car that will depend on me having extensive linux knowledge is frightening. Although I have to learn linux very well as my family business uses linux and my dad has done a ton of programming. He also has SSD drives and spare computers for me to play around with all this.

I guess I am saying that although I am a pro windows person I am not letting that get in the way of what I consider to be the best for this CarPC project.

One question for you Kev000, is there a way to put a custom splash screen with linux instead of all that scrolling text during the boot? I just am aiming for a seamless transition from boot to front end software that would make it seem you aren't using a computer.

thing is, even with this instant bios boot, your carpc still has to load windows by either hibernate or from fresh boot.

honestly, if you REALLY want to eliminate boot times, install a 2nd car battery in your turnk or something, isolated from the oem battery. that way you can leave your pc in s3 sleep, and it will boot into a useable desktop in about 3 sec every time. it depends how long your system will sleep on a car battery, but for most rigs i think you could get a few days.

Yes. in fact, I'm just barely looking into a way to create new boot splashes via a web interface. It could be as easy as 1-upload a png image, 2-download an install package with your new theme. of course, the theme would be incredibly simple. I wouldn't even include a progressbar (boots to fast to care...). I'll start a new thread to discuss the details of this web interface and gauge interest.

The theme would hopefully include a grub splash background and a boot background.

As for boot times, I'd go with LinuxICE upgraded to 9.10 over a 9.10+openice packages. 9.10 boots fast, but LinuxICE boots faster, runs lighter, etc. I'd also do a hybrid sleep and just let your smart PSU kill the carpc if your battery goes too low. resume from hibernate is pretty quick.

Been kinda busy sorry I haven't responded sooner. No need to apologize, I was the one that made the accusations personal, so my apologies for starting and continuing a petty argument.

I measured a ~30mA draw from my carPC when in s3. Even considering a fairly low 50AH battery your taking about weeks of standby time.

is there anyway to send a wake up command over wifi to a carpc that is in S3 sleep mode, to be able to wake it up, sync some data to it, and then put it back into S3? (windows of linux, dont care which)

No worries, Mate, and thank you for the feedback Appreciated!

Back to the original discussion - I have a Commell Board that will boot into Windows, all drivers loaded, within 22seconds from cold boot.

If we cut out the Bios POST, it drops to around 9-10 seconds.....so definately we hope that these new faster (and presumably EFI-based) Bios's would become available for our systems - but, I suspect they will only be developed on new products....
