    Electrical advice needed

    Hi guys,

I'm planning to reroute those Navi Buttons to my Computer with a USB controller or Keyboard. The keyboard part is already documented on the internet, but I first I need to find which Button correspond to which wire...

FYI: I don't have the Navi, I simply installed the Navi Bezel and want to use the Navi buttons with my Computer! So the Buttons will only be connected to my Computer!!

Those Buttons are connected to the Navi Screen (which I have). My question is, how can I check WHICH buttons correspond to WHICH wire?? Would this be doable with a Multimeter??

I'm good with electrical stuff, but not sure which way to go for this!

FYI: I have the Service manual of the car but this wiring isnt documented

Thanks for any kind of help!

are there multiple wires at the back of that unit (navi bezel)?
    or just two wires?
    or a ribbon....

as long as it does not send a digital pulse for different buttons, you shouhld be able to just set the DMM to ohms, ad measure the resistance of the wires-- it should change to a differnt number, or go all the way to zero on a button press.

The minimum number of wires if it was "plain switched" is 8 excluding the centre stick - that could be multiple switches or analog etc - a minimum of 1 wire plus power.

If the lot were multiplexed etc, then 3 wires upwards.

A popular compromise to save on wiring is a matrix arrangement - eg, 3x3 or 4x2 for the 8 switch "active positions" - ie, 6 wires again excluding the centre stick.

use a batery with the dmm and add a wire all using tape and only a 1.5 - 3 volt batery when you conect both tnds then it should have a voltage and its either each button has a ground wich would be great or 1 ground and each button has 1 wire or even 3 wires per button or its digital or varing resistive control with only 2 3 or more wires or you most likely arnt this luckly but usb and those touch screens are 4 wire resistive touch so it could be like that if all else fails make your own buttons to be pushed by the macanical buttons and the joy stick thing if all else fails use a game controller and glovepie to use it for arrows or mouse whatever or get the thumb controller off a psp and use it for the four wire resistive and hook it up to your or another touchscreen and use as a second mouse or if using a separate touch controler again glove pie and use for what ever like wmp or itunes volume and track control sory for so much text but the hole subject is a hot topic for me

I hope they are just switches!
(IE - not chip or electronically - encoded outputs)

That's what DMM resistance ranges are for - the powering of passive contacts/circuits.
