yeah was a few years ago. Those kit are kinda high for what they do. I build a running light led for like 5 bux, its just a bunch of led's, diodes and a 555 timer IC.
heres the plan:

Thats pretty simple to do too. Just buy a digital VU meter kit
http://www.fm-transmitter.com/kits/a...o-vu-meter.htm
Get 6 RED Bar type LED and hook it up accordingly.
Arrange them 3 on top and 3 on bottom. Hook the middle top to the vu meter LED output. The two on the side just hook half way to 2/3 way up.
The bottom is just a mirror image.
I think its 12v, so just hook you stereo out to it and that watch you car talk
I have've tried it but never installed it. I think it should cost you about 20 bux to do this (I've seen site selling the voicebox for 240 bux)
Have fun, post pics if you do it

How 'bout this circuit. Note the dot/bar mode selection at the flip of a switch.

Yep, the kit is based on that design, has a jumper to do bar or dot. Reason why I went with the kit is because that chip was next to imposible to find in any electronic stores. Plus the kit has a nice circuit board made and really easy to put together.
Oh, if you do do the Kitt LED setup, make sure its in bar mode.

Im gonna set that up, ill post pics soon.
But even better, anyone have any idea on programming something like that. I would rather have it be a visualazation on my lcd rather than another panel. If someone already has a winamp plugin or some such i don't want to reinvent the wheel.

Here is a link for creating xmms visuals - same concepts for winamp, but i run linux. I don't understand the logic in the circuit cause im still new at that, but wouldn't it be easy to adapt to a visualization?

Since I am more of a scripter than programmer I haven't figured out the logic for a voice box program. Could tell me basically what I need to do or send me the code so I can port it to xmms and maybe winamp - ill give you credit of course.
