Anyone else notice that with newer cars, the concept of a traditional double DIN radio seems to be dying off? So many car manufacturers are starting to integrate the radio with other systems such as navigation, climate controls, engine, and etc. Perhaps the car PC hobby is going to be less popular in the future as it becomes more and more difficult to be able to custom design something that will integrate into these stock systems. Im not quite sure how the carpc market is going to shift to adapt to these kind of changes.

    ^^a great point.

i think that the aftermarket car modification section in general is starting to get affected by this, and as a result, people are doing less because of it--ie: people will install subs to add to the factory system, rather then pull out the everything factory, and replace it..

Double din stuff is only crucial if you want it to look factory. Take a look at what the guys with planes do and see if they don't prioritize functionality.

I think the quest for the factory OEM look is over rated. It's ironic to see some guy sometimes go through great pains to integrate a screen in the dash, and then proceeds to hang a radar detector by the rear view mirror, not to mention phone docks.

Well why wouldnt you want it to look clean and factory? Personally I wouldnt want to have a Lilliput suction mounted onto my screen as a beacon for thieves.

When I first installed my carpc, I loved the concept and convenience...practically told myself that I would always have a carpc in all future vehicles. Id like to buy a new car in 1-2 years but all the models that Im interested in have the problem of being nearly impossible to install anything aftermarket into the dash.

Some examples would be the Audi A4, Lexus IS250, Infinity G37. It's not just a simple matter of cutting up the dash and doing some fiberglass work. These vehicles have dashes that make it IMPOSSIBLE to install anything in the dash due to the integration of the existing systems.

that is a great point....and judging from the ny auto show a big trend going forward is screens in cubbies raised above the dash of varying sizes.

Has anyone else noticed a general crapification (technical term) of new nav/infotainment systems? Far fewer manufacturers are putting in touchscreens and instead you end up with more buttons then an airplane cockpit and 15 button presses just to use a handsfree phone.

Take a look at the enw e-class particularly the cellphone style number pad used for text entry:

if texting while driving isn't safe...how bad do you think this system would be to use?

Mercedes always had those, see this 1999 SL500 dash.

So nothing new with those buttons.

Suction? You mentioned it, not me.

Got be more creative than that. Maybe if you're concerned about thieves, you should look into a mount that, although not OEM looking, would still hide the back of the monitor (cable, wires, mounting points) and so hide obvious clues on how to dismantle the thing.

Check out my install on the FX35, then. I also didn't want to mod my dash, but still fit a non OEM 7" touchscreen into the overhead console. Not difficult at all.

    Never realized that-good call.....
I still stand by the pinching pennies without any regard to user experience or safety though. Ford is the only way that has made any attempt at increasing the capabilities or safety of an oem system.
