i think the ipad, once dfx5 runs on it, would be great for those people who ask you "can you put a carpc in my car?". because there is no way im installing like what i got in someone else's car, i would be on call at least once a week because of weird stuff.

with an ipad all you need to do is modify the bezel on your car and run power and audio wires, thats it. its really a no brainier for the casual carpc wannabe.
See that the thing though, tech wise I don't think its all that great. How long did it take them to put a camera on the iPhone? I do agree that all they do is put everything in a sexy shell and thats what attracts people. I have to say I find all their devices sexy too, but what makes me turn them away is whats inside the shell and the fact that everything needs proprietary stuff from Apple.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, I like the "its really a no brainier for the casual carpc wannabe." statement!

i dissagree, i think that apple makes products that are easy to use-- which in turn means that they are locked down-- simplicity at the cost of nerd-usability (because you need to jailbreak to access any of the files).

you can give a iphone to a 10 year old, and they immediately know how to make a call, but give them a windows mobile phone, and you might need to show them how to make a call..

that is dependent on the install-- i think that 75% of ipad installs are this simple, but in a point in one of the other threads, the ipad can get just as complex as a carputer when you start adding external devices..

thats what i was implying... apple takes nerdy toys (computers) and redesigns them in ways that normal people would want to use them, both esthetically and functionally.

and while i agree that the features they add are usually a year or three late, i hate to admit that their stuff is well built. proprietary it may be, but at least there is serious design and engineering that goes into those things (like ipods)... theyre durable as all get out, and in case you havent noticed, i really dont hate apple products i just dont like the frappie image they carry.

Get your facts straight before you bash. The iPhone shipped with a camera on day one.

Apple were way ahead of the current norm and had far superior architecture.
The same could be said of the later Mac. (Is Win7 equivalent to Mac93?)

Their "closed shop" attitude did much to kill them.
They had closed architectures, and even when one could get the official support documentation, they had errors and key omissions (deliberate I'm sure - in particular for the Mac; though that wasn't originally "an Apple").

They were also expensive as were their peripherals - maybe as a result of closed-shop mentality. But that was a lesser problem - this is back when the IBM PC cost AUD$7,000 and the first "amazingly cheap" clone cost a mere AUD$4,000 (a sus cheap clone called Compaq - dare we risk it?).

Both Mac & Apple have resurrected, but I wonder how different the scene would be today if they were less possessive.
(Interoperability and open architecture is more common these days. But I have seen (and laughed) as many companies or products have declined or dies through their selfish or closed attitude. When supplying systems for various projects, I was often loath to pay more only to be locked in to a certain brand... it's fine when it works, but first failure, or expansion requirement...)
