Carpc and carputer are relatively known search words on eBay.
Infotainment - just doesn't seem to be right. We building units to watch info-comercials too?

iCar is going to work since most people will assume you are listening to iTunes on your iPad which is connected to the net ... Errr cloud.

I think carpc and carputer are not too descriptive, and I think that is what was asked in the OP? Something somewhat descriptive?

You say carputer and people may think you misspoken "computer", or you have some sort of thick accent.

I just normally say, "I put a car with a monitor into my car" and most people understand.

I do agree that "car computing" doesn't make much sense either since if the above holds true then carcomputing sounds like car commuting or just "commute by car".

The word compute really no longer computes as it used to

I do have a funny feeling that the iPad is going to make a huge impact here than just in the iPad forums which seems to have a hollywar going on about the basic change in the universe that is occurring or going to occur so why not just look forward and try to accept that iPad / slate users are going to change this industry and thereby come up with a term that will allow them to feel accepted. Or just face the fact that even if a term comes up here the padders will just come up with their own term and we'll have to live with what they have chosen.

mobile pc sounds like a smart phone

    hmmm, dorky but inDashpc ???

I think that most folks can grasp the fact that a pc in a car is not the actual car's computer which they probably have no idea that even exists

I think Heather is looking for a term for our hobby. So anything that puts typically unavailable computer-based technology into our vehicles. This can be a traditional carputer, a blackbox with cam, dockable solutions... whatever it is, it has to be all encompassing. Carputing is a perfect term to capture everything, but I agree some people give you the face when you say it.

in-Dash-PC does that, as does car-PC

I'm gonna stick with carputer, as it encompasses everything and rolls off the tongue. If someone gives you the face, it's just a conversation starter that hopefully opens their eyes to our world (at least for a moment).

even if they do get it, its worse because they cant imagine why you would want a computer in your car... its funny how it seems like half of people are like "wow thats awesome!" and the other half scrunch up their face and say "what can you do that you cant do with a ipod and a gps unit?". sad for that latter half of people, theyre in the dark and they dont even want to be positive about anything.

i always say carputer.. but end up explaining after the doubletake. and usually end up saying i'm replacing my stereo with a computer.

Incar PC is sorta what i end up saying by the end of the conversation.

in-Dash-PC has got to be the most descriptive for someone who has never heard of it
