Thread: about to migrate to ssd

first thing you should do when you get your ssd is to check for any firmware update and install them before anything else.
you can resize your hd with windows disk management, or any other equivalent program.
i think you can make complete image of your system using windows 7 backup utility

the other option would be to just migrate your OS, and programs over to the ssd, and keep the 320 for media files.

Personally, I would start clean on the SSD and delete everything except your media (music, movies, etc.) on your 320. Just make sure it doesn't get hot or get moved around a whole lot. HDDs hate that. SSDs aren't that fond of shock, but they can handle it a little bit better than a HDD will...

SSD's have absolutely no problems at all with shock. Most are rated for a massive amount of abuse, and the OCZ units he has are rated for 1500G maximum shock. That's a whole heap of impact, the car around your SSD would be missing at that kind of impact.

SSD's will handle all the shock in the world, and come back for more.

But as to the OP, personally, I would do a clean install on the SSD, but I have never been a fan of migrating installs.

then clone the drive to the SSD... after that format the 320 drive and move the media back to that

You could do that, but you're still running the risk of the clone not going right and ending up with BSODs. Most cloning software clones the whole drive, not just what is used. So that would mean making a 320GB image and trying to put that on your whatever size SSD. There is some software that will clone only the used space. In that case, you're fine. Either way, good luck. I've never had any good luck migrating drives. Not even when I did XPe...

I've migrated hard drives about five or six times now (nlite-Xp) and might suggest Pargon's software. THE most user friendly I've tried, but the issue i kept having was configuring the the boot sector right for the migrated OS.(which paragon fixed) I'm not sure if that applies to win7 or not (edit) or a ssd even, just my 2pennies

but, seems like if you have the room to keep the files from your old OS, that's not a bad idea.

i can recommend gparted for cloning.... never had a single issue.

I use gparted for all my partition resizing....didn't know it would work for this...will try this first
