    wish me luck

over the last 2 weeks, i have had 3 bluescreens and one boot failure, so today i decided to take my working carpc out and set it up inside. i also wanted to reset the bios, because, in attempt to get a small keyboard to work on the os selection scree, i tried disabled usb legacy support and that made it so i couldnt even get into the bios anymore.

the problem was i didnt have a 12v battery to use, and the only power supply i had was 12v power bricks. pc powered up, but one power brick didnt have enough amps to give so the computer would just cycle on and off. i just cut the ends off two bricks and wired them together. i know this isnt kosher, but im pretty stupid too. one brick was 2a the other 3amp, both tested to be between 11.9v -12.2v.

pc powered up with two bricks in tandem, but no video post. i took out a stick of ram, tried some other things, but no video post. so i unplug one power brick forgetting i needed to unplug both. pc stayed on while i try to shove a stick of ram in backwards. i didnt hear or see/smell anything wrong, but this is probably what did me in.

i never got the pc to post inside the house. i either hurt it by not letting it have enough amps to start, or jamming that ram in while it was on screwed it up. wish me luck. i just put it all back together and installed it back in the car. does the same thing, no video post even though everything else turns on and seems fine (keyboard lights stay solid on though, they usually just flash once. bios seems frozen even though ive tried taking out the battery, resetting the jumper and leaving it like that with it unplugged from power for over an hour)

We've all been there. I torched a $500 screen from static discharge.

Maybe you only messed up the RAM.

Go buy yourself a proper power supply for house testing.

    Ouch!
    I've been there, done similar.
But it is annoying when you know the nots and decide to risk it (parallel supplies!!!), but that's not the mistake that goes wrong.

    FYI - I use a battery.
If I don't have a spare, I'll take it from the car. (That's easier than taking the 12V-7AH from my torches.)
Though I did buy an ATX supply. ($10 for 12V@10A- 20A was cheaper than $30 12V@3A plugpacks...)

i had two batteries, but i ended up using those in my UPS... thing was once i bought new batteries for that ups i noticed the batteries i had got swollen, so i tossed them.

and i also had a spare ATX power supply that i used to use, but that went into one of 3 pc's i just sold. i was seriously out of all the options i had.

the biggest problem is i only have 2 days a week to work on anything, so i was just trying to get things done. im going outside soon to turn the pc on, im just hoping that letting it sit overnight will have done something... eek....

Swollen batteries.... AGMs?? If so, well done for tossing them.
And bad done by the UPS for overcharging them, else bad on the crap quality AGMs (unless they were aged etc).

One TIP - do not drop HDDs onto 12V UPS batteries - especially 38AH AGMs. Luckily the HDD and my hand survived the ~2kA short-circuit current, but the dozen-odd paralleled SCRs etc began their sequential light show (I hate paralleled switching!). That was one of the incidents that came to mind when I wrote "been there, done similar". (Why cover the UPS and batteries - I know it's there - I'm not stupid.... not often.

Good luck for the fire up. (Was hat a bad choice of words?)
    It may have survived....
Bets to PayPal #555616555.... (The RAM is fried, but is the CPU...?)

hahaha thanks oldspark, i love your contributions here. those two batteries i had were about 6 years old, left in the garage to freeze and thaw every year. i was amazed they still worked at all.

i opened the pc up all the way this morning, and first thing i noticed was i didnt have a pc speaker installed. must have stole it for something else. i cut the earbud off a set of cheap headphones and got bios beeps back. 3 long beeps. RAM! i knew immediately. so i tried a couple different more configurations...

SUCCESS!!!!!!!! damn ram! well both sticks are fine, once i figured out to just use slot B only, i was able to get into the bios. from there, i set to defaults and now both ram stick work installed just fine. im pretty sure i had some weird settings in there- i remember trying to overclock a little about 3 months ago and i bet those settings were just BARELY good enough (and eventually not good enough).

but not all is well. my nice shiny new linksys WMP300N wireless PCI card seems dead. well, the led light just comes on really dim and i have no network card showing up in windows at all. i forgot to screw in the damn antenna!. i dont know if this is really why it stopped working, i would have thought they would put safeguards against this type of accident, but i know wireless radios can fry themselves if they dont have proper ohmage on the Tx... UGH!!!

well anyway, thats just a $35 card... it can be replaced. my carpc is LIGHTNING quick again, it boots to desktop in under 12 seconds, and shuts down in 8 seconds (just a 1.8ghz celeron (conroe1) chip!) i knew something had been going weird with this thing, and obviously it was bios settings.

so, back to default speeds (actually i lowered the cpu voltage and set ram to 333mhz) and im running prime95 right now. later i will run memtests to make sure all will be well. sucks about the wireless card though, it was brand new 1 month ago....

well actually the wifi card started working again right before i put the pc back in the truck. i thought i was golden, but once the whole setup was installed back in, the wifi card refused to come on again.

i just got in the better sibling of that card- the WMP600N, which is dual band instead of single. its also a little cheaper for whatever reason... i have the WUSB600N and its an amazing little adapter, so this pci one should be similar. will install today!
