the carpc isn't dead, it's just sleeping. You just may not recognize it when it wakes up.

LOL! If a microprocessor comprises solely of an OpAmp circuit or discrete components, maybe a PC is just a clear case so you can view them - ie a display device.

(I refer to things like Smart Battery Isolators, 2-wire distributors (****ronix LOL!), keyfinders, and a plethora of devices not yet complained about ad fined.)

I have a soft spot for the PC in Asimov's "The Last Question" - but that was of the superior analog type. Some now argue the superior of everything - at least in "this" universe.
Otherwise my PC is anyone I want it to be.

hmm, in the beginning carpcs were only for the most geeky & technically savvy, the guys who wanted a challenge & who were driven by there obsession to build... then came the wave of all the "a carpc is a cheaper way to multimedia" people, for years it was all about many building or trying to build a pc into there car because they saw it as a cheaper alternative to a real deal multimedia setup. we've seen the years of the guys who want to throw a pc in there car in a weekend & expect it to just "do", then heard years of complaints about how frustrating it is & seen many who have realized that choosing a carpc just as a cheaper alternative to buying a multimedia setup was not a good enough reason to go through all the trials & frustrations of actually doing it effectively in the first place... so many who got into it for the wrong reason & winded up hacking up there car & never getting a system they could be happy with, why? because they were doing it for the wrong reason... the only right reason is simply because you love doing it, NOT because you think it'll be cheaper & easier...

now, between the phones that can almost do it all, combined with the drastic reduction in prices for real deal multimedia systems & of course factoring in what the factories are now offering, I think in the end the carpc will resort BACK to what it once WAS, & yes, I think the large mass of population who came here because they thought a carpc would be a better alternative to buying a multimedia system will dwindle away, the past few years prices on multimedia head units have already caused a lot of this... for many a carpc was nothing more than a fad, from back in the day when a real multimedia setup would be many thousands... that is surely not the case anymore...

BUT, I think there will always be the geeks & builders among us, the real die hards, the ones who haven't come here for the wrong reason of just simply trying to be cheaper than a multimedia setup... those geeks & builder guys will still exist & those guys will still love the challenge & triumphs & yes even the heartache of what has become the carpc... I have had a carpc in my car for the most part of the past 15 years & I fully expect to continue this for a long time to come... has nothing to do with what the car comes with as a generic system, as long as I can move it out of my way for the carpc I'm good yes it has evolved & of course will continue to evolve, but in the end at the same time I think it will go back to what it once was, & that is something for those who love the doing as much as, or even more than just the having... & yes, in the end I agree that for the masses who have come here in the past many years just to build a cheaper multimedia system, yeah, for them the car may be about dead, but never will be for all...

Agreed. I spoke about the 5 waves of car computing at AFKfest this year. It starts at about 17:40 in the video.
