    What to start with.

    Hello,

I'm new here, looked around alot. But i have a question.
    Where to start.

The thing that i want to make is, that everything on my car '94 MX-5/miata. is controlled by the carpc. Headlights, windows, drl, foglights. But not just like a button.

At the moment 'everything' is already somewhat automatic, When i open the doors the lights will stay on for a few seconds ubt want it to change to 10 sec or 1 min or something like that, And when the car is in ACC mode or ON or Start mode, the lights are also on. So the light switch is always on. Never have to touch the switch. The windows could by auto when doors closed but its an old car the windows getting slow it doesnt have enough time to close.

So wat i want is that the pc controls the relays instead of just a simple ACC signal. So that i can switch it to fully automatic or that the for example lights can stay on without a ACC signal. Or create a climate control with a temp sensor. That will switch off the heating when its on the right temp. And lots of extra things but i think you get where i want to go with the system.

I want a i think a 10" screen and ofcourse the pc. I dont want the pc to be to expensive, the car is a roadster. At the moment i have a pioneer 2din 3100BT. But that one is going to be replaced

I dont have alot of knowledge of computers thats why i ask.
Is this any good to start with? Is this any good?

Than something to control the relays. I'm from the netherlands, not alot of things available here but The velleman kits are good available. So i thought about the K8055.

Also want the speedometer(cluster) or what is the name for it here. to be replaces by an LCD. But the problem is that i have OBD1 and not 2. maybe that is only possible with a aftermarket ECU.

Lots of other things that i want to build but this is a start i think.

    Whats your input.

BTW here is a good example for the project. Maybe i have to create a program myself but thats oke i will look in to that. When i bought the car i started with almost 0 knowledge, and now i'm creating my own electric circuits and systems.

For the LCD gauges have you considered getting a harness out of a newer (OBDII) car and making it fit so that you can simply use the software that comes with the readers available? I would think that someone over at Miata.net or maybe even the guys at Flyin' Miata would be able to help with that, and judging by the work already done to your car I think it is easily within your skill set. Just a thought.

...one more thought - though I don't know how much you want to go overboard with this.

A GEN III small block Chevrolet would get you that OBDII.

v8 would be to expensive over here in the netherlands. 1,75 per liter petrol. Thats about 2,5 dollar. 1 gallon is about 3,7 liter. so thats about 9,25 dollar per gallon converted to dollars and gallon.

on the main page, there is a link to the wiki, and the faq's. at this point, i recommend that you start reading, and researching.. for the amount of tasks that you want to complete, the most-supported product here that will do that is the fusion brain(another popular one is the arduino). but you will need to learn how to code software to use it.

you have a lot of ideas, which can be good, but are usually very overwhelming getting into a new project-- too many times, i end up attempting to research everything all at once-- which almost always is a setup for failure.. big projects need to be cut up into easier to accomplish pieces..

the other thing that i don't think was thought about is fail-safes. you are talking about controlling very important pieces of the car-- the lighting system, windows, and gauges, by a pc that could be very unreliable. while there are many installs here that have very few problems, i think it is very important to have a backup when you attempt to take over any critical vehicle functions to prevent yourself from getting stranded due to a computer glitch...

the last part-- keeping the pc cheap:

my pc install so far has cost about $2,000.
with the amount of integration you would like to do, i would expect a similar figure for all the extra relays, and control boards that you will require.

You might be surprised by the V8 conversion, the same basic engine (LS1) in my friend's stock Trans Am gets about 30 MPG interstate. That said - I understand your concern at that price! I know I would be on a bicycle for the work commute if it were that high here. Bigger issue is paying for the conversion and the fact that it requires the entire car to be stripped basically to a tub and rebuilt. I suggested it primarily in jest.

Also - x2 everything that Soundman said.
