    HDMI to Optical Question

Not quite sure where this should go, so I'll start here.

Im trying to get an optical out connection to run from my Motorola xoom tablet to the processor of my car.

I bought a hdmi to component/vga converter off amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i02_details "HDCP HDMI to VGA + SPDIF RGB Component Ypbpr Converter v1.3b"

Video works, but I cannot get the optical connection working. I am using this hdmi cable which supports up to 1.4. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i00_details. The optical light doesn't even turn on on the adapter when using the tablet. As a test I plugged in a DVD player and everything worked fine (audio and video).

Am I making a fundamental mistake here? How can I go from a Motorola xoom starting with either usb or hdmi out to optical/toslink? FWIW, I don't care about having video out at all.

Did you test it on a HDMI TV to make sure it is even putting out audio over HDMI? I know that the Skyrocket (android phone) doesn't all the time only if it "feels" like it (Im sure it has to do with the item its connected to). I know also that there is, in settings, a check mark for "audio out when docked" (something like that) maybe check that? I would start by connecting it to a TV with HDMI just to make sure it is even outputting audio. Hope this helps a little.

This is from the Amazon page you linked for your converter:

"Support audio output : R/L analog 2CH Stereo Sound"

That sounds like the red and white RCA ports are the only supported audio output. Maybe the optical port is an input?

From the Amazon link you provided
"One HDMI input signal convert to one YPbPr+R/L or VGA+SPDIF sink device"

Maybe VGA plugged in activates the optical?

And didn't it come with a manual?

I don't think so. The RCA ports are for use when in component out mode. Else, optical and VGA should be used together. The test I did with the DVD player confirmed this.

Yeah I checked it out with just the tablet and the hdmi cable into my tv first. Everything worked just fine.

That's because you can't use HTML in forum posts. You use BBC codes.

Hm, seems like an expensive option.
