xm, gps, ect. getting to work without front end software

finally getting around to getting my car pc together. have the majority of the hardware together and want to start using it. but not use a front end software. still like the look and feel of windows over the more standard in car navigation feel that a front end offers. thing is how and what can i do to get xm, gps, media player, ect to work without using a front end software? Im planning on using push button keys under the lcd mounted in the dash for volume and media controls. my screen is multi-touch even though i don't think i will use it much. will probably also be using other buttons and scroll wheels to help aid in using the car pc.
but so far have no clue how to get the xm and the gps to work without a front end software.
sry for the novice questions but i can draw, design, machine, build anything but when it comes to the software part im in the dark and relying on a good friend. just need some direction on where to go from now.

Well you're going to have to find software for the XM player, and you're going to need to buy gps navigation software. Search the forums for the GPS software, there are a couple of options. As for XM, depending on what kind of interface you have, I know mitch's interface has a desktop application, but it's not pretty, it just works. But since you're not running a frontend I assume you're not really going for a slick consistent look anyway.

Some more information might help us help you:
What GPS software are you going to use?
What media player are you going to use?
What XM hardware do you have?
What OS are you planning on using?

For XM you can use satamp4 from mitch's site, gps will be in the navigation app you choose to use be it streets and trips, garmin, co-pilot, ect. Hope this helps SNO

using windows 7 64bit, wanted to use garmin mobile but since found its been discontinued, most likely using simple windows media player. looking more for the car pc to work like a cell phone with aps. being able to control the apps with buttons mounted on the front panel under the lcd. also being able to control the media and volume with the buttons under the lcd.

as for gps receiver and internet planned on just tethering to my cell phone and using it as a modem.

im willing to give centrafuse a try but i have no clue about how to make it look good with the different skins and all.

You might like the look of the Windows desktop more than the front-ends, but it's really not very friendly for in-car use. That's why we have RR, CF, etc.

And what you have basically described there is a Front End.

To use external buttons across a range of separate apps you really need something to pull them together.

You will need something like a hacked joypad controller and use that in conjunction with the hotkey/shortcut facility of the FE.

Hey, I'll probably be writing my own front end software when I finish my CarPC. If you want, I'll post my program up on this forum and you can see if you like it.
