    In Car video cameras x3 - ideas? Will be in race car.

    Hi,

    I have been tasked with setting up a 3 camera system for a race car for a friend next season. Its a 206 if anyone is interested. He doesnt mind how it is implemented but he has the following "wants"

    1.Light weight
    2.Fairly Small
    3.Multiple cameras -x3
    4.Decent quality
    5.Cheap as possible
    6.Easy to get digital.

    I am thinking of a carputer, as it would be digital and i coould run an epia direct from 12v. HD may be a problem but hopefully should stand up.
    However the cameras are the problem:

    1. Webcams? Cheap but maybe not good quality...maybe problems with multiples. Just seen firewire cameras advertised- better?

    2. CCTV type camera going into analouge capture card - better quality but cant find any cheap cards that do decent framerates.

    3?


    Any ideas or experiences much appreciated. Also any info on interfacing pc with speedo etc would be good.
    Feel free to move this if its th wrong forum, but i figured you car guys might be interested

    What about those cameras Armen has at Digital Worldwide I have one of them and they work really well. They are standard ntsc video output. Maybe you could use multiple cheap capture cards and (fingers crossed if using windows) configure them properly and have them record at the same time. What about using something like this:
    eBay 4 port capture card

    Hi,
    Thanks for the input. I had been thinking like that, but hadnt seen those exact cams.
    Those cards are great except they only capture 30fps between the inputs - so 3 inputs = 10fps each = crap. For one that does 30fps each input = $400 (or let me know cheaper!)
    You can get various s/w that uses multiple cameras. However i want to keep the quality:/

    Sorry about that, I did a quick gloss over of the features when I originally read the info for that item...I see that in the description now... What about 3 cheap capture cards? I wonder if that'd work...Web cams would be the easiest, but like you said, quality would be bad. I'll have to do some more research.

    I just had a thought - what about multiples of those 4 port capture cards, only using 1 port on each? They're cheap enough, except for the shipping charge.

    get a video multiplexor and plug the cameras into that, then the multiplexor into the capture card.

    A multiplexor is the thing that splits a tv screen into 4, 9, 16, etc different screens.

    I had thought of this however it means a bigger box :/ I was hoping for a single PCI solution. Also the cards are not so cheap in the UK.

    Yeh i have seen these however they are going to be a pain to split into different vids? Or is it easy?
    And resolution goes down.
