I assume your laptop is connected to the internet and you have a
second lan-interface in your laptop connected with a crosscable to your carputer .
Did you open the properties of "My Network Places" and from there the properties of your network interface that is connected to the internet ?
When you do that and go to the tab "Advanced", you can activate "Internet Connection Sharing".
If you have done that, set your carputers lan to automaticly get TCP/IP
settings and reboot it. You should be able to access the internet from
your carputer then.
To access the laptops disks, you have to create share(s) on your laptop.
Try making a share ont he 98 machine and connecting to it from the XP machine instead of vice-versa... less security involved as 98 isn't too bothered who sees what.Originally Posted by mike86ttype
Don't forget you need 'Client for Microsoft networks' and 'File & printer Sharing'Originally Posted by mike86ttype

If it's a crossover those IP's are not going to talk to each other, there is nothing assigning an IP address to the laptop, the 169.*.*.* is TCP/IP's non-too-helpful way of saying I have no address...
Try a static address on both, 192.168.1.2 on one machine and 192.168.1.3 on the other and see if they can ping each other.
