    mp3 jukebox software

Background: My uncle has a restaurant and plays music using a 50 CD changer on shuffle. He is out of space in the changer, and is thinking of buying a 300 disc changer. I'd like to replace all his cds with an mp3 player/jukebox.

    Basic functions:
    shuffle play (obviously) entire library
auto-rip when audio cd placed in drive

My uncle is not a computer user, so the easier the better. I'd like him to pop a cd in, auto-rip and encode it, then eject the cd.
He plays greek cds, so i'm not sure if a CDDB database/tagging exists. I know some greek cds show up in CDDB, but I'm not sure if there are enough to justify a cddb feature. (I remember the Cobra software from years back stored the CDDB database locally. That would nice, as he doens't have an internet connection at the store)

If tagging was possible, a character lcd showing track/artist would be cool.

He's curently playing audio cds, so the artist/title information isn't that important to him. He'll be happy just by the amount of songs that would be available to him.

Has anyone come across software that would do this, or something similar? Keep in mind that once I set it up, I'd like it to be very user-friendly. I don't want it too complex, otherwise I'll be going over there too much to solve simple problems

    Thanks in advance

WinAmp or any similar MP3 players have a shuffle or random function.

    Did you search at all?

Jeez man.. you could TRY to be a bit more helpful. Sure winamp has a shuffle feature, but does it do all the rest he asked? No.

My take on all this, and how I'd attempt it.

I agree that winamp would be your best choice for the player side of things. As for ripping... download Microsoft's TweakUI. Do a search for PowerToys and it'll pop right up. In there, you can create your own profile for Auto-Play.. and select which disk type would call that profile. Find a program that allows command line parameters for ripping, and make a .bat file with the commands there. Then, have the .bat file augment the Winamp playlist.

So when a CD is popped in, it'd autoamtically rip it to the pre-determined place, and add it to the playlist.

iTunes allows you to do rip exactly how you described. It also allows you to edit all tags information, create regular and smart (auto generated) playlists as well as shuffle music. If you also want to listen to music somewhere else it can stream your music, with playlists to any other iTunes or a device like this

Great encourage folks to post questions without reading at all....
More of the Will my laptop LCD work questions comming up. Way to go.

WinAmp will work and can be downloaded for free. God forbid he has to click a button to rip a CD or edit tags manually. Wow, set it up once per CD, Oh the horror of typing.

Truckin, I agree on some level. I agree that Winamp would be good, BUT, that's not what he was looking for. He's looking for something conveinient and automatic. Itunes is free also, and if you have that big of a database of songs, ITunes kicks winamp's butt.

Yes, I use a piece of software called PartyTime Jukebox... It's all touch screen driven and the author has added some capabilities to minimize the options available to the song chooser (i.e. customer) for a retail establishment type environment...

I registered it for personal use for my personal touchscreen jukebox I built at home. He did a great job ability to quickly scroll through hundreds of albums. It is also quite fast even on slow computers. I dedicated an old PIII 600mhz machine to my jukebox and it works just great...

Sounds like I should look at it. Thanks.

Also, he was looking for suggestions. I gave him mine then was shot down for it.... Free exchange of ideas. I read far more than I post here. Mostly due to the frustrations of posting questions that have answers already and can be found with a little reading.

I'm playing around with your suggestions, guys. Thanks.

I never even considered this as an option, but windows media player seems to do exactly what I'm looking for. Under tools > options > copy cd, you can edit the settings. It encodes using wma, but i guess that doesn't really matter too much to me, and my uncle won't give a damn either way.

TruckinMP3: Dude, you need to take it easy. I've been here longer than you have and I know how to search. Your concern for the forum is much appreciated, but directed towards the wrong guy. Next time I reply, I'll make sure to spoonfeed my posts to you.
