Pardon my poor paintshop skills, but here's a rough idea of what I'd go for.

    Here are the original gauges:

Here would be the replacement (super simple version):

Since the program doesn't exist yet, anything is possible. : )

I imagine that if we're using windows, you can use something like Pivot to set the orientation. If you're using something like linux or DOS, just develop it to display sideways or set the screen statistics in your configuration files (linux).

I'd rotate your display 90 degrees so its wider side to side to better fit the area where the gauges are already. Make all the buttons on the left and right of the display, maybe duplicated on both sides so you can hit with either hand. The difficult part will be finding a display bright enough, maybe you can find a frontlit (ipaq pda style) so it will use the outdoor light. On a cycle you don't have the roof to block sunlight like in a car.

The reason I was thinking of doing it vertically was because I want to emulate the look of the fighter displays and I want it to look custom.

All those fighter displays are square not tall like the drawing. If you make a vertical one like the drawing it will have to be above the handlebar mounts the thickness of the display and case so it will stick up kind of high.

Good point, so maybe square is better. I just don't want 4:3 if I can avoid it. Maybe instead of using a 16:9 ratio screen, I can turn a 4:3 screen sideways to make it look different.
