i was thinking along those line a while back. An alternative would be to try to get the cameras that are offered as an option on the Hummer H2 and some of the Cadillacs. They are supposed to be good and have night vision capabilities however I have not been able to find one nor do I know the price range.

I don't think you would need to know what the data they cops are transmitting, but if you could just recognize that a signal is being transmitted, you would know that a cop is closeby. It would be nice to monitor where they all are, but I really only care about the ones that are close enough to uh, take issue with my speed. If they were using wifi, I wouldn't need to know what data is going across it, just that it is being transmitted from a cruiser.

as for the visual recognition, if you are looking at cars driving on the same road as you, you could probably do some sort of pattern recognition on the headlights/taillights/marker lights shape and relative positions to at least determine the type of car, and if it is used by the police in your area. Night identification would be even easier with the higher contrast of the lights (no night vision required)
