Well... time to revive this old thread. Here's an update on my carputer status:

After long research and thinking, I decided NOT to put the LCD where the clock is, although I already hacked up the clock console. Two main reasons:

    1) The glare is too bad being in direct sunlight, so a cover had to be made. I made one, but it looks horrible, and I want everything looking stock.
    2) As it was pointed out to me, having the LCD on up on the dash would be too far away for the touchscreen to be really effective. In the stock stereo position, it's right where you want it.

So after deciding to mount the LCD in the cd changer location, I just ordered most of my parts today. Here's what I have coming:

    - VIA EPIA M10000
    - Samsung 512 PC2100 DDR
    - Casetronic Black ITX-2699R Case
    - Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM
    - Samsung Slim CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive

Should have everything here within the next week to get started on the build. As for the PSU, I'm going to use the one supplied with the case for now, but will probably try out the M1-ATX PSU, because I like the features it has and it's cheaper than the OPUS. I'm also in need of a 4-channel amp, so I'm still looking for one of those.

As for now, I need to mold in the Lilli into the audio dash piece, probably just going to use bondo because that's all I have. I'll have some pics up when I make some progress.

    - Matt

    Amp

You should try one of these AMPS for your project. It takes SPDIF input straight from your motherboard. Sounds a lot better than the sound card outputs.

If you open that Lilli, be very cautious of what you touch. Mine lasted about 3 months after I installed it. I believe it was due to heat and powering it through an inverter, but you get what you deserve when you start messing around with electronics.

If you are interested, here's a few threads on what I'm working on for my 2003 WRX Wagon:

    8.4" LCD in WRX dash.
    8.4" LCD in WRX dash.

    Duplicating a (WRX) radio bezel.
How to: Duplicating a radio bezel.

There are probably a handful of other threads here and there, but these are the two main ones for now.

Guiliano - Yeah, I've been following your posts for awhile... you're doing some amazing stuff! I get all whole casting process, but the materials are too foreign to me... bit of a challenge just to keep up!

Ill1 - My lilliput is powered through the DC outlet, and I'll probably keep it that way. Haven't had any problems yet, but I guess we'll see.

Atombomb - You recommending that amp on personal experience? I'm just looking for something basic, in the $130 - $150 price range. I'm not too terrible worried about sound quality, since I'm only running stock speakers, but better than average is always nice

Yeah, I haven't really gone over what the materials are, and what "polyurethane resin" or "silicone RTV rubber" are, or how they work..

I'm sure I'll cover it later on in the thread, once I receive my casting materials.

I got the US Acoustics USB-4065 from Crutchfield (The Crutchfield version of this amp is larger than the standard version sold everywhere else) for about $140, I put the USB Audigy NX 2 Soundcard on top of the amp with 6" analog cables, no noise whatsoever - sounds real clean. I'd trust the D/A conversion of the Audigy soundcard over any built in SPDIF on any AMP.

The amp is installed under passenger's seat.

    Pioneer 4 channel amp, 300W

The guy that is selling the 300 Watt Pioneer 4 channel amp on ebay for $70, which is the same one at Best Buy for $150, lives in town and I can pick them up. I am going to get an extra one tomorrow if anyone else wants one.
He is charging me 5 dollars for pick up, and then I will charge $10 for shipping.

If you are interested in one, or anything else this guy has on ebay, let me know. His shipping is off the wall.

The amp you posted there is refurbished... does he just sell those or brand new ones? Thanks!

Yea, oddly enough he told me that specifically. I was told it was 8 dollars more for the new one, which would be the one that you can buy at Best Buy. I chose cheaper one. I normally change stuff before I wear it out for one reason or another. The one I got is black, and the one that is at the link below is silver. Here is a link to the same amp that is not refurbished.
