In my world we have a much better hardware solution...It's called Remote Lights Out Edition built onboard the servers and add in Remote Insight Boards. All I need is an active network/internet connection for access and to power up or down my servers from anywhere.

    Arrow Posted awhile ago...

I had this idea a long time ago right when i stumbled upon mp3car.com. Im never one for much forum posting, just a reader. BUt when it comes to APPLE i gotta say something. Apple is all I use and you can talk trash all you want but I do digital video and multimedia so I use a Mac.

Anyway I wanted to put a G4 cube in the center console. And a friend of mine, OSX code savvy, wanted to make the ODB2 program for OSX (aint one, perdy sure) and then a frontend GUI like mediaengine etc. Well to do a ODB2 to mac, cuz we dont got serial ports, you need a serial-usb and then u need a controller program in OSX to work with it and decode the data into a usable form. That took way more time than a soon-to-be college graduate wanted to do. So since he has a crappy PC and his 17" Powerbook, he just bought the controller, used ScanTool in Windows and that was it. Mean time i got nothing. But now with a somewhat renewed interest I can start again ($ willing) and not worry so much about getting all that data from my car and instead, code up a nice GUI for OSX explicitly for touchscreen/car use. Im not all that good but IM sure someone would love to go for it. Then again i dont see much Apple stuff on Mp3car so who knows.

To me integration of this type is ALOT easier in the OSX environment because all the programs are interchangable in parts used in XCODE. Like iTunes is easy to integrate into any GUI. Etc Etc. What isnt easy is the readily available hardware parts because macs dont clone, they breed. Or another way to put it, is Steve Jobs is a douche who likes to keep his company completely his and no one can touch any part but 3rd party. Works for me.

Ill do alot more research and post alot more in the coming times just wanted to throw my hat into the carputer ring, only mine is like rainbow colored and has a bite taken out of it. Damn thats frooty.

Anyway....this european guy did a good job on his carputer mac though no touchscreen and even as a programmer his GUI, though for his needs he says are fine, are plain and very very crappy. G4's though not HIGH on the Mhz value scale, a 400Mhz could run Mp3s, DVDs, Emulators, WiFi, GPS, and even gaming up to probably Quake3 (when it first came out).

    Here's to the music.

funny how people who probably watched and most likely enjoyed lord of the rings, and of those i bet some are the nerdy type who think its the best thing since the optical mouse. You do know LOTR was done on a mac in post, using Apple Shake, which has won 5 of the last 5 academy awards for special fx. If you listen to music or watch a DVD you paid someone to use their mac. Complain all you want aboot apple, but when it comes down to it everyone needs some form of entertainment and unless thats video games, you cant count on PCs alone.

    there im rantin' now. WOOOOO!

could someone please post something useful, this isnt a forum for PC to MAC battles, honestly thats so 5th grade, like when SNES vs Genesis and the mortal kombat had blood on genesis and everyone was like im better than you and blah blah. This forum is about computers in cars to play MP3s etc etc so who cares if it runs linux or OSX.

Not sure exactly what was used on LOTR but most of the articles I've read suggest that mostly SGI systems were used, as they are on many FX entensive movies (all the Pixar movies, Shrek, Dreamworks movies, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, Star Wars Episode 1, etc etc)

Just thought I'd throw SGI out there, I guess it's because I work on them all day.

so you think only SGI are used in entertainment? Yes for render farms cuz thats what they do. Shake comes for OSX and also for Unix and other renderfarm frameworks etc. My point is that look it up Shake has won the oscar for 5 years. And for a fact, watch the LOTR dvds extras, they use Shake for all compositing, how else u gonna make a dwarf out of the fat Pavarotti guy from Sliders.

Macs are handsdown the only solution for multimedia, dont kid yourself. Avid machines are almost always mac, and if theyt arent it doesnt matter because everything is software and cross-platformable in one way or another.

So anyone about the Apple carputer?
