modified xbox instead of a PC?

What do you use to powert the Xbox directly from DC and auto/on off via the ignition? Do the normal Car PC PSUs work as direct replacements?

Ok once again did someone get the touchscreen to work with XBOX XBMC?? According to XBMCs website microsoft mouse and logitech are only known working mice, seems so generic should work but the again dont understand details on touchscreens. http://manual.xboxmediacenter.de/wak...ardMouse&v=6gz

Next did anyone have any ideas to how to protect the HDD from shock, bumps and such? Ive heard to sideways mount the drive to help prevent head crashing.

And last any clever people out there have an idea on how to trigger power on, on the Xbox when your car starts? I have an XIR remote kit which powers the xbox on and off by using standby power, so there must be a way to make a trigger relay..

The xbox requires a momentary pulse (across its power switch) from a toggle of the car ignition switch.

The design for a circuit like this is here:

Although in this case instead of using a toggle switch you would connect the + of the capacitor to the ign line from your car (the accesory one for the radio etc). This should work and would turn your xbox on when you turn the key to the accesory postion and turn it off when you turn the car off.

However this would need testing as in the circuit the toggle switch connects the capacitor to gnd to discharge it (which would send the off signal to the xbox) however in the car the ign wire doesnt go to gnd when u turn it off, but the other accesories (radio, etc) should draw current from the capcitor, causing the relay to pulse.

If someone wants to make it and test it in their car, feel free to post the results!

With regard to the touchscreen:
For the mouse XBMC uses the mouse driver from microsoft that comes with the XDK. A touchscreen isnt compatible with this so someone would have to write a driver specific to the xbox, which would be very difficult to do. I suggest the only way to do this would be to bribe one of the XBMC developers. But i doubt it will happen

The other option is to run linux on the xbox then u can use touchscreen with the linux drivers and you could then also get GPS functionality with a GPS mouse.

If you want to use the xbox in car i suggest mounting the IR reciver for the remote in the car dash somewhere so u can control XBMC with the remote, or if ur feeling up to it, modify the xbox controller and itergrate the Dpad and a couple of buttons into the steering wheel!

Touchscreens work on a fundamentally different level then mice. With mice your position is based on your movement relative to your last position, on a touch screen that position is absolute. The drivers for both touchscreen and mice accomplish the same thing, moving the cursor to the specified position, however, the implementation of these drivers are substantially due the differences at the hardware level.

What this means is don't count on touchscreen support unless microsoft adds a driver specifially for touchscreens to the xBox libraries or someone can back engineer a touchscreen driver for use on the x-box.

you can buy a convertor for the xbox, so you could run it on a m1 unit.. this would solve all the power on problems (dc-dc), and also the turn on. I think linux would be the way to go, as if you knew what you were doing could quite easly attach the touchscreen upto one of the usb ports on the xbox. I have thought about going down this road, but knowing nothing about linux, it would be a long road !

For powering the xbox, All you have to do is put a momentary switch close to the driver's seat, and wire one of the legs to the ground of the xbox and, wire the other leg to the 2nd pin from the bottom of the xbox font panel pcb(or the 2nd yellow wire from the bottom) In other words... The 8th pin or 8th wire.
