Thread: modified xbox instead of a PC?

you can do EVERYTHING? run linux, xbmc, evox? how would you upgrade to larger hard drives without a new BIOS?

I softmoded mine. Its fockin simple and you can do anything. I used Splinter Cell though, and you left out the action replay/usb adaptor.

Ive personally ran debian, play movies on xbmc, and use evox (and avalaunch, i like avalaunch better) on my 120 gb xbox. Ill give you a demo movie in an hour or 2 but my upload to the webserver sucks

The harddrive swap takes a little effort (about a half hour of steps) but the basic upshot is you unlock your harddrive, back it up, get a new harddrive, generate a key to lock it to your specific xbox, restore your hard drive image, lock it, and format your remaining space. I have a guide.

I loosely follow that guide for new hard drives, except I use a tool called xboxhdm to do the actuall locking and unlocking rather than the dos tools in the guide. It sets a "master password" to XBOXSCENE so you always have a backdoor to undo your steps in case you lock with the wrong password (if you use the wrong key on the dos tools you basically brick your hard drive)

Oh yea, I never used action replay I just got the save from a friend who sent his memory car into the xbox linux people to get a mechassult save.

wow, that sounds really easy... id like to do that instead of my unreliable piggyback mod chip setup (lost the solder pins so im using the screw over crap) ill look into the softmodding. It should be a little easier since i have a mod chip to do the soft modding, i have everything accessable.

as far as i'm aware you wont be able to swap hard drives when softmodding, if you want to do this and looking for a cheap mod.. then I would suggest flashing the on board bios. This uses the same boot with a game load from a save game trick as the softmod, but you need to solder two jumperpads on the motherboard to allow the software to write to the onboard bios. Again I will help out with this if needed

What do you mean swapping? Like taking a HD out of 1 xbox and putting it in another? To do that you keep both harddrives powered off of their respective xboxes after their xbox ulocks it for that session, then plug in their ide cable to whatever device you want.

no if your using the xbox as a media centre then your going to need a bigger harddrive than a 8/10 gig .. so you would need to install a bigger one. Which I dont think is possible unless you have a modded xbox to do this with. Just flash it its very easy to do..
