    NYTimes/Slashdot articles on carpc's

Looks like carbot got a pretty good plug from the NYT...
    NYT Link
    /. Link

No mention of mp3car.com, which seems a bit odd... They did mention a few others, including Hybrid.

Not sure why they kept jumping up and down about having the car read email... Seems like they love that subject, just like a few years ago they were SURE we'd all be reading our email on a touchscreen embedded in our refrigerator door.

I have a feeling we're in for a flood of newbs, kinda like we had back when AOL first connected its users to the intarweb. Good times.

I went to the carbot site. Looks like a real decent setup. Except that the software looks like crap. Not to mention buying carputers sucks.

Yeah. The guy selling them appears here on these forums every so often (maybe 7 or 8 posts)... I think they could have chosen a nicer install. People are always amazed when they see the Windows XP logo when the computer starts to hibernate; They're not even aware that it's not an off-the-shelf headunit. Seems like more interest might have been generated if they showed one of the nicer installs.

    Oh well.

"Someone has to take the responsibility to move this market beyond the hobbyist,"

Why does he have to? The only reason I can think of is for profit.

    Profit is a remarkable motivator.

What happens when all of these units overheat and they all want a replacement parts / unit. Profit loss will be very high. There is no specified operating temperatures, and im sure that there has been no circuitry to shutdown on hot / cold. Brilliant!

Just don't make any guarantees I guess. Besides I've had 3 carputers in a span of over three years. They've survived summers in southern California and the winters of Pennsylvania. No weather related issues.

Until somebody (me?) makes an indash, complete unit, with touchscreen for under a grand these things suck. If i was going to buy one of these pieces of crap, it had better not be crap! It had better be advanced enough to do everything an expert wants and easy enough for a novice to install and use. And by easy to install, i mean a HU with standard connectors for a wire harness to convert from your factory install to the carputer. This doesn't look interesting at all except for the shiny box it is in!
WTF?!? You did what? With who? Why?
Current Carputer... 20GB iPod, I am working on an upgrade though!
