Question for thumper_svx

Is a SVX turbo? What kind of aftermarket support does it have? How does it handle?

I've always liked those things...

This forum probably ain't the place for this kind of thing... but hell, there's not a whole hell of a lot else going on!!

The SVX is a normally aspirated, H-6 engine producing 230Hp and 224lb/ft of torque.

There was no turbo version produced, but there are those out there who've successfully fitted a Garrett turbo to the car and got it to run, though only at lower psi's so far.

There's not a lot of aftermarket, but there's a good number of creative folks out there. There are aftermarket suspensions (though hard to get hold of), aftermarket exhausts, chips etc, even aftermarket tranny rebuilds (level 10)... but it's not as active as, say, the Mustang market.

I could go on for hours... suffice to say there's only 15,000 of them in the US... probably closer to 12,000 by now. It handles wonderful... so good that my '94 LSi is the second I've owned. There's a club at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/subarusvx that has now seen over 50,000 messages to which I'm a frequent (and one of the first) contributor(s).

Cool. Thanks for the info. YOu know, I've been seeing more and more of them for sale lately, and a lot driving around. For the rarity of the car, I find that suprising. I've always liked the look (although the back end could use some work...), although the thought of owning a piston engine kind of turns my stomach.

I'll definately look into that forum.

Note it's even more amusing 'cos I call that out with something between a Belfast and East London accent

A lot of them have come up for sale recently because they're just reaching that age... they went out of production in 1997, so many that were on leases are now coming up for sale. Older ones are coming up simply because they're starting to hit that "magic" 100K mile mark that people decide is far enough... well I've owned 4 Subarus now, and I know they last... so I figure if I look after this car it'll last me at least until the clock ticks 150K miles... maybe 200K miles.

Note they're not QUICK cars... 0-60 is about in the low 7's range... but they are FAST cars. There's very little that can keep up with it accelerating above 75mph... and I've cruised for two hours at over 100 without batting an eyelid (though don't tell the local constabulary

Sounds about right. Personally, I think 200K is nothing for car. My RX-7 is at 218,867 and no problems.

Sounds similar to the RX-7. Not particularily fast off the line, but pulls like hell as long as you keep it above 5K. Now that you've got me thinking, I'd really like to take on an SVX at the top end....

Heh, if I ever make it into your neck of the woods, you're on!! It won't be much of a battle though... I've got some exhaust problems I'm working on right now (rattling heatshields), and it DESPERATELY needs a tuneup... but have you SEEN an SVX 6??? Changing sparkplugs is relatively easy, but I just don't have the time with two kids to pull out the battery compartment and misc other hardware just to change them!

I've taken on a 94 RX-7 at the high-end... pretty level up to about 120 where I started hitting my fouled plugs. I backed off because the engine started running REALLY rough all of a sudden. Next time though... hear me if you're out there, Steve???

Rattling heatshields aren't too bad. I have siezed front brake calipers

Ah, spark plugs. Gotta love the RX-7 for that. Spark plugs cost $25 a piece, but can be changed in 5 minutes flat.
