    Interesting Observation ......

As far as the discussions on laws regarding Screens in cars and the common factors in the laws between states etc....

These devices will / would be ILLEGAL in our cars ( forward of the back of the front seats )

    Pocket PC
    Phone version Pocket PC
    Some Palm Pilot PDA's
Some of the newer color cell phones
    JVC indash headunit KD-LHX500
    Microsoft smart phones
those kiddie watches that have moving animated creatures on them

    WHY, you ask...

Cuz they all have some sort of video, moving images

I can even put a full DVD in Divx format on my Pocket PC

So, Maybe we should write the manufacturers of these things and ask why they would sell us something that is illegal in the state we live in and request compensation... this will put a fire under the arse of the politicians to change the laws ( for the better ).. Also, write to the state representatives etc....

Hey Governator .... Hasta La Vista Baby

    Anyway, just an observation

Unfortunately no different than the legal issues we have with smoked license plate covers, smoked lights, window tint, lighted washer nozzles, and those firefly things that go on your valve stems. They are all illegal in Oregon, yet are sold at GI Joes.

I see a problem with that though.

Legislatures (in all their infinite wisdom) will then require GPS be installed in ALL portable devices capable of playback, and then have them disable themselves above more then a walking pace.

I just wanna see them try to pass something along those lines.

This is copied from the California vehicle code regarding vehicle equipment:

    Television
    27602. ( ) (a) A person may not drive a motor vehicle
if a television receiver, a video monitor, or a television
or video screen, or any other, similar means of visually
displaying a television broadcast or video signal that
produces entertainment or business applications, is
operating and is located in the motor vehicle at any
point forward of the back of the driverís seat, or is
operating and visible to the driver while driving the
    motor vehicle.
    (b) Subdivision (a) does not apply to the following
equipment when installed in a vehicle:
    (1) A vehicle information display.
    (2) A global positioning display.
    (3) A mapping display.
    (4) A visual display used to enhance or supplement
the driverís view forward, behind, or to the sides of a
motor vehicle for the purpose of maneuvering the
    vehicle.
    (5) A television receiver, video monitor, television or
video screen, or any other, similar means of visually
displaying a television broadcast or video signal, if
that equipment has an interlock device that, when the
motor vehicle is driven, disables the equipment for all
uses except as a visual display as described in
    paragraphs (1) to (4), inclusive.
    (c) Subdivision (a) does not apply to a mobile,
digital terminal installed in an authorized emergency
vehicle or to a motor vehicle providing emergency road
    service or roadside assistance.

So, as long as you have GPS (map display) with your CAR PC, then your fine. Maybe Frodo etc. should implement a quick link that enables the map to be displayed very quickly! I.e., when you get pulled over by a cop!

Oh yeah... and my take on this... if you are watching a movie etc. whilst driving then you get what you deserve.

    Thats not what I'm saying.......

The laws state that it has to be inoperable when the vehicle is in motion ( video / dvd etc.. ) I'm in agreement.... However, there HAVE been people on this board that have been ticketed even though they were legal....

They will not be able to say everything showing video, must show GPS... or they would have to show GPS on all the new cell phones.

    (edit / add )
According to Paragrpah (5) of the Calif law.. If I had a cell phone ( newer ones ) on my person in the front seat, I could be ticketed. Even if said cell phone was in my sock !!!
I used to have my pocket PC in my suit jacket all the time while I drove. That was against the law as well. It didn't have anything attached that disabled it if the car was moving. Just having it turned off isn't enough. You have to prove that it won't work.

A parallel synergy: In Saudi it is illegal to have a phone with a built in camera. Question: Is it illegal to have a camera that has a built in phone.

Basically, putting aside the very different laws from state to state, we are now getting into the realm of very frequently debated subject of identity. The bottom line is:

If you believe you are within the law then go to caught and contest the ticket.

If you feel that you are distracted by your Car PC and that it inpairs your ability to drive then consider if what you are doing is indeed correct. If you believe that your driving is NOT impaired then you can:

    - Be prepared to battle it in caught
    - Just take the risk and if you get ticketed then so be it
    - Pray every night that you are not going to get pulled over

On a slightly relivent note, my partner picked me up in the car the other day from Boston's Logan airport. Whilst she was waiting for me outside, one of the usual cops came walking down the line of cars he ended up chatting to her through the window and was intreagued with the whole Car PC thing. Obviously when i walked out of the terminal and saw a cop leaning in through the passenger door I was some what concerned. Shame I did not ask him about his take on the law.

The only problem I see with your parallel synergy skippy, is I don't think there will ever be a device sold that's primary use is a camera and as a plus is a phone too.

Well it seems as if your PocketPC (or any video displaying device) were in the back seat (out of drivers view) it would be legal.
