    Temperature Measuring thingy thing

Was thinking about using this to show the temperatures of my amps. The recommended software (Smartie 5.2) has ten different temperature settings it can read for MBM. If I could get hold of the temp sensing units for say the CPU and mount them on/in the amps, wire them up into the Shuttle PC in the car, could I use the Temp readings to show the amp temps on the screen?

Hope that makes sense, little bit tipsy atm

I don't see why that wouldn't work. The sensors are probably 10k thermistors; Radio Shack sells them over here for a couple of bucks, and I read someplace that some laptop batteries also have them built in. Chances are really good that Maplin has some equivalent thermistor.

That's kind of expensive for the display, although the vacuum fluorescent displays do look nicer. New and used LCD character displays can be had for a lot less money, like around 10 bucks, and it's not too difficult to wire one up to a parallel port. Maplin's got them starting at 6 quid: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...dID=&doy=11m11 This type of display has been used on all kinds of equipment, so there's plenty of cheap surplus displays around too.
Do a search for LCD and "parallel port" and you'll find out how to wire one up.

I dont know how much you wanna get involve with the electronics/programming side of it but you can use the joystick port to sense the change of resistance of the thermistor.

There should be a temp meter using this port floating around the net somewhere...google it

    Cheers guys

Guess it is a bit pricey for what it is, but I'm none too hot on programming and as the software is free and reasonably idiot-proof, it balances out

I'd go with a standalone Character LCD like a Compunurse or something.

That free software will work with the 5.99 Maplin display.

Not even close.... it's just not being updated anymore.... as it stands right now, it's still badass and there are TONS of programs that run off it, one dumps a graph to an image file (see my avatar)

I use it still, but that's gonna change after I format. I hope the plugin authors switch to something like speedfan.
