    wired news article

sorry if this is a repost. just FYI, this article was on wired and it reports on technology in cars. I guess you could call it the flip side of the technology coin that I usually don't see too much of online. I'm guessing because, as the article mentions, the auto industry tries to keep it hush hush.

He was about to pull away from a stop sign in his Maryland neighborhood when the car surged through the intersection. Nothing he did -- stomping on the brake pedal, shifting the car into neutral, pulling on the hand brake -- stopped the Camry, which raced for several blocks before he swerved into a snow bank.
Put the car in neutral and it kept on going and "raced several blocks"???
Seems unlikely. Anywho, should have shut off the engine, Dummy!

If this wasn't about a Toyota I'd probably believe it. But come on, a car to accelerate on its own, hmm probably, but in neutral...

Anyone remember the killer Audi’s of the mid 80's. This is why "all" automatic trans cars now have that little lock out that makes you have your foot on the brake before you can come out of park. Fact was, it was a software glitch the whole time but Audi never admitted to it and blamed it on driver error. Here is the recall notice sent to owners.

    Campaign Number: 87V008000 Date: 1987-Jan-03

Component: Power Train: Automatic Transmission: Lever And Linkage: Floor Shift

Defect Summary: SUDDEN ACCELERATION FROM A STATIONARY POSITION MAY OCCUR, WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO REVERSE OR DRIVE.

Consequence Summary: UNEXPECTED SUDDEN ACCELERATION WITHOUT PRIOR WARNINGCOULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH, CAUSING INJURIES.

Corrective Summary: INSTALL AN AUTOMATIC SHIFT LOCK TO PREVENT THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER FROM BEING MOVED FROM PARK TO REVERSE OR DRIVE UNLESS BRAKE PEDAL IS APPLIED AT THE SAME TIME.
