i would be willing to bet that its the FM modulator. Those things are know for having bad quality when compared to other ways.
My setup includes a BOOKPC, Jensen Power Inverter, and JVC FM Modulator. When I'm playing my MP3s, there is light static in the audio. It's almost as if when a song hits a certain frequency there is static. The static isn't highly noticeable, but it's there and it's annoying to me. I've grounded everything from the BookPc to the inverter. I've also got a ground loop isolator installed. I'm using Winamp, and I've tried messing around with the EQ to no avail. Media player has the same type of static. In the sounds control panel I have accelation turned off and best quality on. I'm at a loss for ideas, mabey someone can help me. PLEASE.

a few things....
* FM modulator.... try to aviod it if you can
* buzzing from your ATX PSU driven from the inverter. check my website on howto remove PSU filter circuit. this was the cause of my noise.
