I don't think that senator is doing us any favors.

Really, the "black boxes" are old news. They've been there for 10+ years. So far, the data is only used by your service tech to diagnose problems.

The reason you don't see them being used as evidence in court is that no one has guaranteed the accuracy of the info. There are no regulations that pertain to accuracy or reliability. No one is certified by any agency to retrieve the data (and guarantee that it came from your car and is relavent to this case). Etc., etc.

Now if you were to get some official to bring the subject into the spotlight, there is a chance that some other politician will think these black boxes are a good thing. After they realize that the data won't hold up in court without regulation of the black boxes, they may decide to lobby for these regs. Then we're screwed.
