    Question Empeg

It appears that rio has discontinued these players. Has anyone on the board picked one of these up now that the price has came down to $699 for a 10gig unit?

You don't need a trunk to put in a home built player...

    Well.. I understand that..

    I've been there. Done this.

My only thought is. I can spend 200, 300, 500 dollars to build a new system with a ATX dc-dc psu and all that jazz. or I can spend 700 even and be done.

Where to put the player is only part of the issue. where to put the controls are another interesting problem for me. i don't want to give up the very little interior space that I have. Remotes are somewhat ackward.. might be the only viable option at this point.

I'm considering all my options.. but the empeg is a neat little package, considering I only want to be able to listen to mp3's

let me recommend the empeg. while it cannot do all the stuff like gps and movies, if you just want mp3s, nothing beats the empeg. it is easy to use, you can take it out and use it inside. i have been nothing but happy with mine. no problems with it.

there is alot of talk on this board about how it is worthless b/c you didn't build it yourself. i can understand this, but i recognize that i don't have the time, money, or skills to do this properly. i started to at one point, and realized that for mp3s, the empeg is a perfect prefab solution, albeit a bit expensive. with the base model only like $700, you can't beat it for functionality. you can always add a bigger drive once you fill up the factory drive. any questions, just ask.

    That's my thoughts exactly.

All this time, I've been chasing the EMPEG. Headlight chasing.. with a big bulky keypad and tons of wires..

I watched a MPEG video of some of the empeg visualizations, and they are neat.. the file navigation seems logical, with nice search abilities. Toss in the home connections, and I'm an instant party at anyone's house.

Simply not the case. Just 'cos you buy something and don't build it yourself doesn't make it worthless. What confuses me is that the reason behind purchasing the empeg was originally given as nester's car not having much trunk, which is in my mind quite unrelated. Cost, or time spent building something is a far better reason.

Fwiw, my home built unit is used exclusively for mp3s, it doesn't do dvd or gps. That makes it worthless to some people too.

    Each to their own...

i know you weren't saying this, or even that everyone thinks that, but there are people on this board who turn their nose up at anything that isn't homebuilt, like it is totally inferior to their setup just b\c you didn't built it. that is what really bothers me. i'm glad that there are people who see the empeg for what it really is. just because it dosen't fill your needs, that dosen't mean it isn't perfect for someone else.

that is true that some people on this board may feel that way. but also, you have to compare commercial versus homebrew. home many commercial units can hold 6000+ mp3s, gps, games, dvd, divx, tv tuner, visulization, etc. so, some of it isnt just talk, its PROOF!
