Athlon Mobile - speed stepping

I didn't find much from searching...

So, has anyone gotten automatic speed stepping working for mobile athlon processors on regular mobos?

with a quick google search, I found this:

looks like it would be perfect. However, what about motherboards that require the "wire trick" to get the CPU recognized... does it then actually see it as a mobile athlon, or just a generic athlon? I would be really interested in getting a mobile athlon setup if this will work with it. It would sure be nice to have it clock itself way down when it was just sitting there not doing much but actually have some balls when it needs it...

So, if it hasn't already been done, could someone with a mobile athlon setup try this out and see if it works? or if there are better software solutions, I'd love to know about them.

edit: i just came across the AMD PowerNow! software... seems even nicer, but has anyone tried it out on a mobile athlon board? when i install it on my (non-mobile processor) desktop computer, it says the computer is not powernow! compatible (of course)... so I guess the big question is, does the software detect that the system is powernow! compatible when you do the wire trick on a regular motherboard? or on the mobile-ready motherboards? I'd love to hear from someone who has one.

that guide has some great info on the matter. Perhaps some people with mobile athlon setups could try that CrystalCPUID software out and see whether or not it crashes... I'd be particularly interested in any info on the BIOSTAR M7NCG motherboard, since it seems to be pretty mobile-athlon-friendly.

I'll test this with my BIOSTAR M7NCG + Athlon XP-M 2400+ and post results.

it works. i dont know about automatic speed stepping, also some motherboards(like my asrock) allow multiplier adjustment via jumpers on the motherboard, so u can over/underclock it that way. as far as i know no board will display it as a mobile athlon, mine showd AMD k7 processor @ X.XXghz and my asrock shows it as a sempron 2500 when its clocked at 1.75ghz.

So, what exactly are you stating that 'works'? The topic of this thread is whether automatic speed stepping would work when running a mobile processor with a regular motherboard.

This is not about whether one can manually over/under clock the processor. That is a given.

exactly.

The tomshardware article states that they got it working on some mobo's, so obviously some motherboards are capable of recognizing it, or at least detecting it in some way to allow the speed stepping to be enabled... I'm just crossing my fingers that the BIOSTAR M7NCG can pull it off, because that's the exact mobo I'm going to be getting for mine, with an athlon XP-M 2200+

If you run linux you can get speedstepping working on just about any desktop board. For windows it looks like the limitation is weather or not the bios has the correct speed tables for your processor. Your best bet (other than knowing people that have had success with a board) is to look for ones with bios updates more recent than the manufacture of your chip.

Well, I tried installing PowerNow! under WindowsXP Pro SP2, and I got the folowing message from the installer:

This version of AMD PowerNow Technology does not install in this version of Windows.

that's the one they used in the guide anyway, and it does have some throttling built-in...

I tried this util just now. The SPeedStep control option is disabled
