    Post Co-Pilot question

I've heard from (most of) you guys that Co-Pilot is the best GPS Software to get. I'm heading out of town in about 2 hours and thought maybe I'd pick it up and try it with my Laptop for this trip.

Do I have to buy the whole package (software + the receiver), or is the software compatible with cheaper receivers. I shouldn't buy this without doing more research than I've done, but it would be cool to have for this trip. What do you guys think?

the software is compatible with GPS receivers that put out standard NMEA sequences.
I have the Randmcnally GPS receiver and copilot 2001 works fine with it.
You can get the GPS receiver on ebay(~$80) or at a randmcnally store ( $99).
The softwarre is another question bc it's not sold separately from the receiver so you are on your own in that aspect
do a search on the forum for copilot and you will find other info.

    Wink

So, moahdib where'd you get yours?? LOL.

On my way out of town on Friday, I stopped at CompUSA and bought Delorme's Earthmate w/ Street Atlas 8.0 I paid $140. I just got back from my trip and am debating on whether to return it or not. It worked, but I feel it could be better.

The receiver seemed to work fine, so I guess I'm a little disappointed with the software. I read some other posts talking about hacking the unit to work with other software. I realize this is somewhat risky, but what software should I go with? CoPilot ? Is Copilot even compatible with a hacked Earthmate?

I didn't realize until I opened it that the damn thing uses batteries. This is great if I'm in the woods with my laptop (happens all the time), but if I'm in the car, why can't I use an alternate power source? Why not draw power from the laptop? Are all the models this way?

earthmate has been hacked by countless people...for power and also for giving out NMEA data... which MIGHT make it work for copilot... =) well you dare to try..good luck. Just do a search for tripmate, hack, MNEA on www.google.com and you should find tons of stuff.

Street Atlas is pretty useless for in-vehicle navigation unless you have a passenger to navigate for you. Copilot is much better.

You can use SOME GPS receivers with the CoPilot 2001 software. Copilot specifically tries to make sure it's using it's kind of receiver. The Randmcnally GPS will work without any effort.

A top of the line receiver, the Garmin 35GPS (which I highly recommend) also works after you configure the GPS to send the messages CoPilot wants. (One of the features of the Garmin 35GPS is that it's configurable)
