    Hard-Wire iPod Charger into Car

I really don't know all that much about car electronics and wiring, except that I'm tired of cables being all over the place for some of my extra devices. I was wondering how hard it would be to wire the charger for my iPod into my car, and free-up my cigarette lighter and clear up some of the wiring?

What would it intale? Would it be feasible for someone with some general eletrical, but no car electrical experience?

Are you just interested in hardwiring the power? Are you using an FM modulator to get the music to your head unit or an input on the HU?

You could get something like this and use it for parts (a little expensive) or you could build the same thing yourself with parts from Allelectronics (my favorite site) and fab it into your console (the way I would do it).

Yes, I'm just interested in Hardwiring the Power. For input into the headunit, I have an AUX-Input Adapter Installed.

I'm not as concerned about the actual parts to connect to the iPod Firewire Port, as I am about actually wiring it to the car. I have a 95 Toyota Camry- I don't even know where to start for splicing wires, adding connections, etc...

BTW: this is a 2nd Gen iPod w/o the Dock Connector.

If you already have the charger, it makes it easier. Somethings that can be done.

If the charger has a voltage regulator, you must determine where it is. If it is int he cigareete lighter plug, then either disassempble the plug, and make the connections to the wires leading to the regulator board. Then, Find a 12 volt source that is switched. Then tap into that source. You can use the fuse box, or the wires behind the cigarette lighter.

If the regualtor is seperate from the plug, or there is no regulator, then you can cut the plug off, and connect the wires leading to the voltage regualtor (or the I Pod connector) to either the fuse box or the wires behind the cigarette lighter socket.

And yes, you can extend the wires with other wire.

Of course, you could always get a 1 to 3 cigarette lighter adapter, that will give you 3 ports from your single cigarrete lighter port.

Well, you could just gut the cigarette lighter adapter and solder 2 wires to what's in there, put in an inline fuse and run power and ground. I'm sure there's something in the cig. adapter that cleans up (regulates) the power.

Then I'd grab some MDF the fiberglass resin and rage gold and build a sweet mount for it

    It happens.

But, have you noticed, I am being extra nice to the NOOBs today.

Damn, maybe I am not feeling well.

We need a little more info before we can tell you exactly what to do.

What does the inline fuse do? What voltage should I have for it (the fuse)? What other needed information would you like to know?

I found out that the ipods have their own voltage regulator, and that its not inside the charger.

    I appreciate the help guys.

I did notice that you're being extra nice to the noobs. It's funny that's the reason (not because of you - just the possibility of the standard 'search first' response )I jumped in and responded quickly seeing that it was his 1st post - didn't want the poor guy to get hammered on his 1st question

Eric, "What does the inline fuse do?" is a VERY BASIC questions that can be answered with a simple or

The most important thing for a fuse is the Amperage, with Voltage secondary. As for amps, probably no more then 2 or 3 or so.

Are you sure the voltage regulation is done inside the IPOD. It is possible, but not likely.

If you are gonna do this the first thing you need to do is get a multimeter if you do not already have one.

Once/if you have one, then we can determine if the regulation is done inside the IPOD or in the charger itself.

You will then check the voltage at the connector that actually goes into the IPOD, to see what is comeing out. If it is more or less then about 12 volts, then it is done in the charger. If it is about 12 volts, then we know the IPOD is a 12 volt device.
